Job overview

We are looking for someone who wants to use their finance skill to make a difference to the healthcare services we provide.

Following some internal changes an opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and hardworking individual to join us.  As part of the Management Accounts Team, you will provide a high quality accounting service to a range of Service Lines in the Care Groups. This is a rewarding and challenging role requiring financial and technical accounting expertise, underpinned by excellent communication and organisational skills.

The successful candidate should educated to Degree level in the relevant subject and / or have equivalent demonstrable experience.

Main duties of the job

This role it to provide basic management accounting support to a number of service lines and to support the work of the Management Accounts team with financial and technical accounting support.  The role involves utilising detailed understanding of accounting procedures, processes, regulations, financial techniques and relevant legislation, for individual Service lines. 

Some of the key responsibilities of the role will include assisting in the production of management accounting information and high quality financial reports in line with required timescales, ensuring information is accurate, timely and robust, regularly liaising with Budget Holders and Operational Managers .

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role it to provide basic management accounting support to a number of service lines and to support the work of the Management Accounts team with financial and technical accounting support.  The role involves utilising detailed understanding of accounting procedures, processes, regulations, financial techniques and relevant legislation, for individual Service lines. The role gives an opportunity to expand and develop these skills within and with the support of the team.  

This includes

  1. Providing routine financial support and general guidance to the designated budget holders on all aspects of management accounting, utilising specialist knowledge of complex NHS accounting regulations and relevant legislation.
  2. Utilising detailed understanding of accounting procedures to assist with the production of timely and accurate monthly financial reports on the activity, income and expenditure positions of the Care Groups to Service line Managers, Budget Holders and Senior Finance Managers.

 

  1. To assist the Management Accountants in the production of month end and year end financial reports using knowledge of financial systems and other software packages including a narrative where required explaining key issues and reasons for budgetary variances, forecast outturn, discretionary staffing analysis and FIP progress.

 

  1. To assist Service Line Managers and Budget Holders with complex funding, expenditure and manpower queries.

 

  1. To review all staff change forms and vacancy panel forms in a timely manner and in line with Trust financial control procedures, liaising with Budget holders where not completed accurately, and HR department for processing.

 

  1. Apply best accounting practices to ensure an accurate representation of the Service Lines’ financial performance.

 

  1. Use persuasion, motivation and negotiation skills to encourage and influence Service Line Management Team Budget Holders within the Service Lines to ensure cost-effective decision making by management.

 

  1. Work with Budget Holders to understand their needs for financial information and to promptly provide it, allowing and ensuring budget holders understand and achieve budgetary control.

 

  1. Assist the Management Accountants with the budget setting process for Service Lines ensuring that budgets are reflective of the resources required to deliver services.

 

  1. Be able to use the Trust accounting packages to a high standard, thereby ensuring maximum information is available to the Service Lines and Trust.

 

  1. To analyse variances by comparing actual income and expenditure versus budget, to take account of the complex interaction between activity and income and expenditure and highlight areas of concern to the Management Accountant, Service line Managers and Budget Holders to identify any financial and activity problem areas to persuade Managers to implement appropriate action.

 

  1. Identify and maximise the financial impact of Service Line Financial Improvement Programme (CIP) schemes.

 

  1. Work with the relevant Managers to generate accurate financial forecasts for Service Lines, forecasting expenditure and non-contract income.

 

  1. To input and manipulate financial data in detailed computer spreadsheets and reports, where speed and accuracy are essential.
  2. To undertake light physical effort and extended periods of computer use in an office environment
  3. To concentrate when inputting data, checking and reconciling information and making calculations

Essential criteria
  • • Demonstrable experience within a similar role.
  • • Ability to communicate confidently both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organisation.
Desirable criteria
  • • Demonstrable NHS Management Accounting Experience

Qualifications

  • Educated to Degree level in relevant subject and / or equivalent demonstrable experience
Desirable criteria
  • • Interest in gaining further related qualifications.

Aptitude & Abilities

  • • High level of numeracy.
  • • Good Analytical skills.
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proficient with “Office” Packages pref. Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint.
  • Able to prioritise own work.
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service depending on monthly, quarterly and annual cycles.
