Assistant Craftsperson Mechanical

The Estates Department at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust are looking to recruit a Band 3 Assistant Engineering Craftsman (Mechanical) to undertake maintenance and assist with new installation on a wide variety of mechanical engineering services and equipment within the Trust’s properties.

The successful applicant will be working on a diverse range of engineering services found in a modern healthcare environment. Career progression to tradesman status may be possible following a period of familiarisation and with additional training & support.

The applicant will need to be self-motivated, have good practical & communication skills and will be required to demonstrate previous experience within a maintenance or installation environment.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

The core duty of this role is to work with the Mechanical Team to ensure the Trust has a safe compliant water system minimising the risk of waterborne pathogens such as Legionella.

Other duties will include working with the Estates team to carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs work on mechanical systems such as ventilation, water systems, pressure systems and various plumbing services.

The Estates Team consists of three workshops, Mechanical, electrical and Building where a collaborative and inclusive work environment is promoted. The Estates team collectively works very hard to provide building services to all areas of the Hospital in a safe compliant way to enable every clinical team within University Hospitals Plymouth the ability to deliver the services patients require.

Operational Engineering Service

  1. To be conversant with Electrical and Mechanical systems
  2. Use relevant tools, plant and equipment in a safe manner and in accordance with manufacturers instructions
  3. Assist higher skilled grades on all types of maintenance, new works and repairs
  4. Carry out semi-skilled duties independently and without routine supervision, and the ability to prioritise workload
  5. On completion of relevant training carry out semi-skilled work on other trades (electrical and mechanical)
  6. Carry out maintenance on a wide range of heating systems, ventilation systems, water systems, boiler plant and observe safe working practices
  7. Carry out maintenance on drainage systems (above and below ground) using appropriate pressure washers, breathing apparatus and tools
  8. Select, collect and be responsible for materials as required
  9. Ensure that ward bed head services are working safely and correctly for the benefit of patients and staff
  10. Provide and receive information, reports, surveys, and record results
  11. Basic understanding of computer use, and the information it provides
  12. Ensure all plant rooms/areas conform to all health and safety requirements
  13. Follow estates and trust policies in own role
  14. Provide and receive routine information, record test results, use and record electronic information
  15. To carry out work in accordance with Health and Safety requirements, policies, procedures, and regulations
  16. Use electrical/mechanical test equipment, meters, mains voltage testers, specialised steam cleaning equipment
  17. Fault finding on basic electrical/mechanical equipment and solve problems using own initiative
  18. Carry out routine planned maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment in conjunction with maintenance instructions
  19. The ability to manage, plan and organise own workload based on work order system issued by supervisor

 

  • Be an active member of the engineering team and support the delivery of a highly effective, quality, and responsive mechanical service within budget
  • Be a positive role model and actively promote the Trust’s vision and strategic aims, and values
  • Work with members of the Trust and key stakeholders to develop and maintain a positive reputation for efficiency and operational responsiveness
  • Provide a strong contribution towards the Directorate, supporting the Team Leader (Engineering) in ensuring that all services are 24/7, patient focused, high in quality and effective, optimising utilisation of human, financial and other resources.

Qualifications
