Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and clinically focused person for the Consultant in Emergency Medicine role. The successful applicant will join a dynamic team of 28 Consultants in an Emergency Department (ED) that sees more than 100,000 patients annually and is the most extensive ED and only Major Trauma Centre (MTC) in Devon and Cornwall.

We are a unique Trust having close links with the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit, the hyperbaric medical emergency service at DDRC Healthcare, and the Defence Medical Services. In addition, we have close links with the local medical school, two Air Ambulance services and the local coastguard. Several of our staff also volunteer for the local RLNI services and BASICS. University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPT) services an overall population of approximately 1.67 million for tertiary and quaternity services, providing a comprehensive 24-hour speciality cover, including cardiology with 24-hour PCI cover, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery.

UHPT has confirmed significant, exciting future investments with a £160 million investment for a new state-of-the-art ED and £16 million for an onsite Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC). 

 

Main duties of the job

Clinical 

Your main base of clinical work will be at Derriford ED where you will deliver, supervise, and lead a full range of Emergency Medicine care to adult and paediatric populations. The post holder will provide Emergency Medicine care at all UHPT satellite sites as required. The panel will discuss any specialist interests at the interview.

Job Plan

The job plan for the trust is a standard 8.5 Direct Clinical Care/1.5 Supporting Professional Activities split.  Additional sessions may be available depending on the needs of the department and will be discussed as part of job planning.  The annualised rota has an-call frequency of 1:6 frequency.

Management and leadership Responsibilities The appointee with undertake administrative duties associated with the efficient and safe running of the Department. They will actively engage and support the department through departmental management roles including clinical governance, teaching, supervision of junior staff, training (for which study leave is provided) and quality improvement

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On Specialist register in EM or within 6 months of CCT
  • Full GMC Registration and License to Practice at the time of appointment
  • ATLS/ETC, APLS, ALS provider status (or UK-recognised equivalent)
  • Level 3 adult and child protection training
  • FRCEM or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree
  • ALS/ ATLS/ ETC/ APLS Instructor

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide Experience in ED, including a developed system/advanced model of EM
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of all patients in an ED
  • Experience of quality improvement
  • Knowledge of research methodology
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in completing research, publications, and national presentation
  • Advanced degree in research

Specific clinical skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced airway management skills
  • Advanced procedural sedation skills
  • Level 1 ultrasound competency
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2 Ultrasound competency

Teaching and Learning

Essential criteria
  • Ability and experience of teaching clinical skills and practical procedures to clinical colleagues and medical students
Desirable criteria
  • Expertise in using simulation to deliver teaching
  • Medical education teaching qualification
  • National education representative role

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives, GPs, all staff groups and others
