Job overview
The Women’s and Children’s Care Group incorporates Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Services, Genitourinary Medicine, Paediatrics and Child Health. The Care Group is divided administratively into Service Lines; Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Gynae Oncology, Subfertility and GUM, supported by a clinical Service Line Director and a Service Line Manager.
The obstetric and gynaecological service is located in a purpose-built unit at Derriford Hospital. It includes 12 beds in Delivery Suite co-located with a 4 bedded obstetric triage unit, a bereavement suite, 28 maternity beds, 18 Transitional care beds, 12 gynaecology beds and a 20 bedded Neonatal Unit. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the Level 3 service provider for the Peninsula.
All outpatient facilities are within the same building, providing for Antenatal Clinic, Obstetric Day assessment, Fetal Medicine and Obstetric ultrasound. Gynaecology services are co-located.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to join our friendly and committed maternal medicine team and our fetal medicine team. The maternal medicine team consists of 1 lead consultant, 3 consultants with specialist experience in gestational diabetes and diabetes care, as well as 2 consultants in the perinatal mental health clinic and preterm services and our specialist midwifery and nursing team. Our fetal medicine team consists of two consultants and our specialist midwifery team.
Maternal medicine is part of the Southwest regional network, with the central site being Southmead Hospital in Bristol. There are weekly MDT’s to share learning and discuss complex cases. There is scope to develop our services further, and the post holder will be encouraged to work with our existing team to develop new ideas and ways of working.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Currently the service consists of a weekly specialist endocrine clinic, with 3 specialist clinics for GDM, obstetric haematology clinic and a weekly complex care clinic. The complex care clinic sees cardiac, gastrointestinal, bariatric and rheumatology patients. There is a weekly perinatal mental health clinic which has close links with the psychiatric perinatal mental health teams, and a fortnightly preterm labour clinic.
This post will be to provide maternal medicine services as part of our team, attend MDT’s and be supported to continue to expand their experience and skills. The post holder will provide clinical obstetric leadership on labour ward and inpatient wards on a 1:8 basis. Separate caesarean lists occur daily during the week, and the postholder will contribute to these sessions. An example job plan is included.
