Job overview
The pathologists all undertake subspecialist areas of reporting and there is flexibility to accommodate the incumbent of this post in a number of subspecialist areas by mutual agreement, depending on the individual's interests and departmental needs.
Renal biopsies, lymphoma, sarcoma and medical liver biopsies are reported by a limited number of pathologists. There is currently subspecialist reporting of most other areas including breast, upper and lower gastrointestinal, urological, thoracic, head & neck and hepato-pancreatico-biliary specimens.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to develop areas of subspecialisation and join the relevant reporting teams related to those areas. Coronial post mortem work is available for interested applicants; however, it is not mandatory
There may be an opportunity for a mutually agreed re-organisation amongst the present pathologists current areas of specialist interest to allow the incumbent to become lead pathologist in an area of interest. Participation in the reporting of some of the following areas would be particularly welcomed: soft tissue pathology, thoracic pathology, uropathology, gastrointestinal pathology, head & neck pathology, medical lever and /or renal biopsies

Person specification
Education, Qualifications, Skills
Essential criteria
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the GMC (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
- Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CTT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Thorough knowledge and extensive experience of general diagnostic Histopathology.
- FCPath II (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- Formal management training
- Enthusiasm for, and experience of, teaching medical students.
- Other postgraduate qualification or degree (e.g. MD, MSc)
- An interest in soft tissue, breast, gynaecology, thoracic, urology, or medical renal subspecialties
Management
Essential criteria
- Exposure to laboratory management
- Working knowledge and experience of the NHS and its organisation
Desirable criteria
- Formal management training
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Ability and commitment in teaching pathology to STs and to other professional groups.
Desirable criteria
- Enthusiasm for and experience of teaching medical students.
Research & clinical audit
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit in clinical practice
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of continuing research with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Interest and experience in clinical trials reporting
Interpersonal skills
Essential criteria
- A proven track record to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to establish good working relationships with colleagues.
- An ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates good leadership qualities.
