Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join University Hospitals Plymouth Maternity Service as a Band 3 Maternity Support Worker (MSW) working predominantly in the community covering a wide geographical area on a day to day basis. You will be required to support the delivery of high-quality and safe care to women and babies within the community settings.

  • The MSW will be a competent individual, working as a member of the maternity team providing care to women and families throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period. The MSW will work under indirect supervision of a registered midwife and be guided by the midwife’s expertise. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and professional individual who has excellent communication and IT skills and will be able to work effectively in a demanding and continually evolving environment. The successful candidate will be provided with training to support the role and obtain many additional skills.

Main duties of the job

The MSW will undertake a range of duties including: Personal care of women and babies, providing information and advice on self-care, infant care and initiating support with infant feeding, health promotion, clerical, educational and housekeeping duties all to ensure the smooth running of the maternity team. This job will require flexibility to work within various children's centres and will need to be proficient with IT skills to record care being given.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.            To be aware of the patients’ physical, emotional and social needs and to report       accurately to the midwife.

2.            To establish good relationships with the patients, relatives and colleagues ensuring accurate and effective communication at all times.

3.            To be able to self-manage and organize own day to day tasks and activities against care delivery plans. Under the direction of the midwife, be able to adjust plans in response to service needs.

4.            To demonstrate independent inquiry, through knowledge and experience within remit of                    role.

5.             To undertake clinical skills as directed by the midwife and report findings accordingly.

6.             To maintain accurate and legible records as appropriate under the direction of the                            midwife.

7.             To contribute to the maintenance of a safe working environment.

  • Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of working with families within a large setting
  • Ability to have a flexible approach
  • Proven evidence of prioritising workload

  • Phlebotomy Skills
  • Demonstrable experience working within a large clinical setting
  • Proven evidence of infant feeding training
  • Extended IT Skills
