Assistant Psychologist, Critical Care

This post is an exciting and challenging opportunity for dynamic and self-motivated assistant psychologist to join the clinical health psychology service for the critical care department at UHP Derriford Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is comprised of two adjoining wards: a general ICU with up to 18 beds, and a Neuro ICU with up to 10 beds. Derriford Hospital is a Major Trauma Centre and is part of the Peninsula Trauma Network.

The key component of the role will be clinical:  providing assessment and screening of the psychologically and cognitive functioning of critical care patients, providing psychological first aid and psychoeducation and support ICU related rehabilitation. An emphasis with be on the assessment and treatment of patients at high risk of psychological distress and trauma. The successful candidate will work with referrals from the critical care team and other inpatient wards. They will also work with healthcare staff, supporting mental health and wellbeing, and supporting the unit’s Expert by Experience group.  

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

The successful candidate will embrace the challenge of working both in critical care and following patients through onto the ward.  The role is part of the multi-disciplinary critical care rehabilitation team, whose focus is on reducing the impact of Post Intensive Care Syndrome, which includes the physical, psychological and cognitive consequences of critical illness.  A key part of the role will be multi-disciplinary consultation, assessment and intervention with inpatients.

The successful applicant will work as an autonomous professional within HCPC and BPS guidelines and codes of conduct, and guided by principles and policies or procedures of the service.

This role is offered as a development role with progression to the band 5 role upon successful completion of a preceptorship programme.  It is expected that progression will be achievable within a period of up to 2 years and will be dependent on the experience of the successful candidate. In the event that the elements of the development plan are not fully achieved the role will remain as a band 4. This will be further discussed as part of the interview process and with the preferred candidate as appropriate.

General:

1. To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with Clinical Psychologists.

2. To work within the BPS guidelines for the employment of assistant psychologists.

3. To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry (in both medical notes and psychology case notes) and report writing in accordance with professional codes of practice of the BPS and Trust policies and procedures.

4. To observe personal duty of care in relation to equipment and resources, such as computer, data projection and audio-visual equipment, and psychometric test materials.

 

Waiting-List Management 

1. Responsible for collecting, collating, and monitoring information on current waiting times  

2. Take a pro-active approach to managing own waiting list, including through feedback mechanisms, monitoring, and refining criteria for acceptance onto the list, prioritising provision of resources for meeting both clinical and non-clinical needs. 

 

Policy and Service Development   

1. To support the Head of Service, to develop the Clinical Health Psychology service 

 2. As a clinician within the clinical health psychology service establish a high quality, responsive and accessible service to the MDT teams 

3. Takes a role in furthering the psychological care aspects in projects relating to Clinical Health Psychology. 

4. To contribute to and support a clinical health psychology service for critical Care. 

5. Collating and presenting highly complex information, advice and documentation from a range of sources to support the Clinical Health Psychology Department and the Critical Care Service line in negotiations with Trust managers and commissioners regarding service commissioning and specifications.

  • Demonstrable experience of working in health/hospital setting

Qualifications

  • Honours degree in Psychology (main subject) 2.1 or above
  • Eligibility for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
  • Interest in the field of Health psychology

  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis

  • Proven communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to engage and interact with adults with health problems
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, families, carers and colleagues and work in settings, which the atmosphere may be highly emotive
  • An ability to apply existing psychological proven knowledge to a physical health context
  • Able to use basic psychometric test equipment
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and/or challenging behaviour
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to effective team functioning
  • An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines in a health-care setting
  • Well-developed IT skills including using a variety of multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
