Trainee Research Assistant Practitioner

Job overview
This is a development role as a trainee within the Synergy Team in the Research and Development department. Synergy is responsible for a portfolio of studies in a wide range of specialities including Hepatology, Dermatology, Maternity and Paediatrics. You will be enrolled at Plymouth Marjon University to achieve your Foundation Degree for Assistant Practitioner. The Foundation degree course consists of taught modules, e-learning and national competency frameworks which you will work towards on the unit. Please be aware that you will need to work a minimum of 30hrs/week as part of the apprenticeship agreement. The post is for a trainee assistant practitioner so will be band 3 during training and band 4 upon completion.

The post holder will join a research delivery team of approximately 80 research nurses, AHP’s and practitioners. They will work dynamically within R&D and the community, be involved in the day-to-day care of patients / participants on clinical studies including screening, recruitment and follow up.

Main duties of the job
Works as part of the clinical research team to support the safe conduct of research in in accordance with the Research Governance Framework and Good Clinical Practice guidelines and provide assurance that the rights, safety and well-being of trial participants are protected.
• Works under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner;
• Works within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to local and national protocols / standard operating procedures / policies;
• Delivers high standards of compassionate, dignified care, managing their time, tasks and resources effectively;
• To undertake the Trust Assistant Practitioner training programme and competencies within agreed timeframes.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Leadership
1. Have an understanding of the clinical research team work-plan and contribute to its achievement.
2. Contribute to research performance of relevant studies.
3. Take responsibility for own health, safety and security.
4. Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical and research policies, procedures and SOPs.
5. Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures without direct supervision.
6. To be able to prioritise workload even when frequently interrupted and under pressure.
7. Maintain effective communication between the research team and patients (who may at times be distressed) tactfully and empathetically.
8. Be part of a blame free culture in reporting incidents and where appropriate support local investigation of incidents.
9. Support appropriate studies within PHNT/UHP and its partner organisations as appropriate.
Research
1. Work within the Department of Health’s Research Governance Framework for Health & Social Care and the EU Clinical Trials Directive.
2. Participate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
3. Support the clinical research team by attending study visits and collecting accurate and relevant study data within both the hospital and community setting.
4. Help to ensure that trial specific investigations and procedures are undertaken as required by booking relevant investigations and assisting patients to appointments.
5. Ensure that information is transcribed accurately where required and assist with the maintenance of the Trial Site File.
6. Support external audit and monitoring visits by ordering and collecting patient records and act as a runner or chaperone as required.
7. Collect and handle clinical trial prescriptions and medicinal products.
8. Assist in study close-down procedures.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Diploma qualification in a healthcare related subject / or equivalent demonstrable experience (Level 3 or Level 4)
- Numeracy and literacy qualifications e.g. GCSE or ‘O’ level grade C, CSE grade 1, adult numeracy and literacy or key skills level 2 or achievement at Level 1 in Skills for Health numeracy and literacy as part of the recruitment process
- Willing to undertake and complete Foundation Degree / QCF L5 Diploma for Assistant Practitioners
- Willing to undertake completion of local research competency pack.
- Computer literate
Desirable criteria
- GCSE Grade C or above in English and Mathematics.
- GCP training.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant healthcare demonstrable experience
- Ability to organise and prioritise own workload and work to tight deadlines
- Demonstrable experience with dealing with confidential patient information
- Ability to communicate information to patients/carers/ members of MDT
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable experience of clinical research within large clinical setting
Aptitude & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to work cohesively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- High level of interpersonal and communication skills
