Job overview

This is a permanent appointment for a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons, specialising in lower limb soft tissue, lower limb arthroplasty and general trauma. This position will undertake elective operating at both Royal Derby Hospital and other UDHB sites. At Royal Derby Hospital there is responsibility for the management of both elective and acute patients. You will have significant soft tissue, arthroplasty and and general trauma experience.

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a large team of existing orthopaedic consultant within the Trust. This is a dynamic, forward-thinking team with plans to grow further. The post also includes a 1 in 16 on-call commitment. 

We are seeking a high calibre individual who will bring added value and extra capacity to what is already a highly regarded and very busy unit.

At Royal Derby Hospital the specialty comprises 8 purpose-built theatres, 5 wards, pre-operative assessment and outpatient clinic facilities as well as the Pulvertaft Hand Unit, which has its own dedicated facilities.

 

Nottingham University has a graduate-entry medical school on the Royal Derby Hospital campus which has greatly enhanced the teaching and research opportunities for medical staff.  The Trust is committed to education and you will therefore be expected to participate in student and postgraduate teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You should possess FRCS or equivalent, have completed a Higher Specialist Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics, and possess full GMC Registration with a license to practice and be eligible for entry on the GMC Specialist Register by one of the following routes:-

1.      Certification of Completion of Training (CCT) the proposed CCT must be within 6 months of the interview date

2.      Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application

 

The city of Derby is centrally located with excellent road, rail and air links and within easy access of both urban and rural activities including the Peak National Park. A good range of primary and secondary educational facilities and social amenities are also available.

Informal visits will only be arranged for short listed candidates.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCS (T&Orth) or equivalent
  • GMC registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register or have CCT or be within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview and entry on GMC Specialist Register by date of commencement or evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration application
  • ATLS certification
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Soft Tissue/Arthroplasty Fellowship
Desirable criteria
  • Sports Knee Fellowship

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development and the requirements of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
  • Attended management course for Consultants

Teaching, Audit & Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduates and postgradustes
  • Experience of supervising F1, F2, ST Trainees
  • Ability and experience of teaching clinical skills
  • At least two peer reviewed publications
Desirable criteria
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of formal presentations
  • Evidence of ability to work as part of a MDT, sharing administration duties
