Job overview
We are seeking a 0.6WTE (22.5hrs) Band 7 Occupational Therapist for 7 months, on a secondment basis, specialising in Neuro-Splinting.
This exciting opportunity would be suitable for an Occupational Therapist with proven Neurological Rehabilitation skills and an interest in neurosplinting. You would be responsible for the assessment, fabrication and provision of bespoke and off the shelf splints. You would also have responsibility for the development and supervision of more junior staff and students and be part of the senior leadership team in specialist rehabilitation.
You will sit within the Spasticity Team, Specialist Rehabilitation and Therapies Business Unit and be managed by and receive supervision from the Operational Lead, Specialist Rehabilitation.
As an integral part of the Spasticity multidisciplinary team ( Rehabilitation Medicine) you will have clear links internally with inpatient neuro rehab teams (KL and Stroke) as well as the outpatient therapy teams in Specialist Rehab, ensuring both peer and professional support is available from various sources.
Main duties of the job
To be the clinical lead for Spasticity and Neurological Splinting within Neurological Rehabilitation
To lead the development of the neurological splinting service across the Trust with responsibility for teaching and developing competencies in this specialist area.
To provide advanced specialist Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment of patients with neurological conditions who may have diverse presentations and complex needs, in a variety of clinical settings.
To ensure that Neurological Rehabilitation Services in Derby are engaged in relevant research projects/clinical trials and implement and evaluate new and innovative clinically effective treatment techniques in order to establish Derby as a centre of excellence.

Education, training and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Occupational Therapy degree
- HCPC registered Occupational Therapist
- Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to post
- Current driving licence
Desirable criteria
- IT related qualification
- Completion of Professional Practice Placement Educator qualification
- Management and leadership experience
Experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Significant previous experience in neurological rehabilitation in a variety of settings
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary team in a senior role
- Experience of involvement in data collection and audit
- Experience of administering and analysing a range of outcome measures within Neurological rehabilitation
- Experience in / competent to use a variety of IT packages (i.e. excel, Word)
- Experience of teaching
Desirable criteria
- Experience of initiating data collection and audit
- Experience of leading and implementing change
- Rehabilitation experience within in-patient, out-patient and community settings
- Experience of teaching within Neurology both formally and informally
Skills and Behaviour
Essential criteria
- Highly skilled in Communication at all levels with excellent people skills
- Able to manage own stress and awareness of stress in others
- To assess and clinically reason for a variety of bespoke and off the shelf splints for neurological conditions
- Able to use a risk assessment approach to maximise patients' safety and function
- Excellent planning and organisational skills to enable effective management of own patient caseload
- The ability to lead, develop and evaluate the service through data collection, audits and reports
- To be able to fabricate a variety of bespoke splints for neurological conditions
