Job overview

Interviews will take place on week beginning 2nd September. As part of the interview process you will be required to give a ten minute presentation on the topic: "What, in your view, is the role of speech and language therapy within PICU and enhanced care mental health inpatient settings?".

We are excited to welcome an experienced, compassionate and innovative SLT into our growing Inpatient Mental Health SLT Team. The post holder will work within our new Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and Enhanced Care Unit at Kingsway Hospital, Derby.

This role is ideally suited to candidates with experience of working within mental health inpatient environments. However, we would also welcome applications from candidates with appropriate transferrable skills from community mental health, neurodevelopmental and acute settings.

You will have significant experience in independently managing complex communication and eating, drinking and swallowing disorders in a holistic, trauma informed and patient-centred manner. As a member of the multidisciplinary team you will use your knowledge and enhanced communication skills to build positive relationships and work collaboratively to develop and support best practise on the wards.

You will be supported to develop and thrive in this new and exciting role by a compassionate and supportive leadership team, as well as access to peer support from other senior SLT colleagues from across the trust.

Main duties of the job

As an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team, you will provide highly specialist clinical support to the PICU and ECU wards, providing a range of assessments and interventions to support patients with eating, drinking, swallowing and communication needs. You will work collaboratively with patients, relatives and other members of the MDT through joint working, attendance at relevant meetings and open communication to identify and work towards agreed goals.

You will also take an active role in promoting a communication friendly ward environment and in supporting shared decision making, capacity assessment, discharge planning, training and patient engagement.
You will work with the Divisional Lead SLT to support the development of inpatient SLT services and provide clinical support to junior staff and students.

There will be requirement, at times, to travel between our sites in Derby and Chesterfield so the ability to travel independently is essential.
