An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and committed registered pharmacy technician to develop specialist skills within mental health, whilst working as part of a dedicated, pharmacy team for the next year.

You will play a pivotal role in ensuring optimum performance of the pharmacy service whilst working in the ward teams at Kingsway Hospital and providing cover if needed to ward teams at the Hartington unit Chesterfield.

It is Trust policy that for posts that are for a time limited period, applicants who are currently employed by an NHS organisation will only be appointed on a secondment basis and should have approval from their line manager if this is possible before applying. Applicants who are not employed by an NHS organisation, will receive a fixed term contract.

Main duties of the job

Participate in supporting a high quality medicine management service that is accurate, effective, efficient and safe to all wards.
Ensure all new inpatient and crisis admissions are reconciled in line with national and local policies and medicines are ordered in a timely manner to patients within the Trust

Liaise with  our pharmacy operational team regarding the supply of medicines

Provide medicines information and support to patients and carers to optimise treatment outcomes

Act as a role model, foster a patient centred culture and always project a professional attitude and appearance within and outside the department

Ensure audits are completed as per schedule and governance standards adhered to at all times. Ensure all action plans are followed up

Regular dispensing sessions to include dispensing of name patient prescriptions, clinical trials, extemporaneous products and controlled drugs, designated person in charge and ACT within our own pharmacy  at Kingsway Hospital Derby to support the delivery of the service.  Support a high quality medicine management service that is accurate, effective, efficient and safe to all wards

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role will include:

  • Regular ward visits
  • Medicine reconciliation and checking of PODs
  • Completion of Discharge Medicines Service (DSM) dashboard
  • Patient counselling 
  • Inpatient top up and stock top up 
  • Pharmacy governance audits
  • Accuracy checking of medicines

The pharmacy department promotes a culture of continuing education and development: applicants will be expected to aspire to further enhancing their own knowledge and skills.

This post will be based at Kingsway Pharmacy Derby. 

You will have a BTEC Level 3 Pharmaceutical Science  alongside NVQ level 3 Pharmaceutical skills qualification or equivalent.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Pharmacy Technician qualification (NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Services plus under pinning knowledge from BTEC
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a qualified technician or obtaining
  • Accredited Checking Technician Qualification (ACT)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current and up to date pharmacy experience including dispensing, medicine management, pharmacy audits and ward services
  • Good understanding of data protection
  • Familiarity with drug names and basic clinical information
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in mental health
  • Knowledge of NHS
  • Knowledge of EMIS
  • Experience of Counselling patients
  • Experience of Training
