Job overview

Are you an experienced, enthusiastic, motivated Dietitian? Would you like to develop your people management and clinical leadership skills? Are you looking to join an established dietetics team? If so, come and join our inpatient mental health dietetics service in Derbyshire as our Clinical and Operational Lead Dietitian.

This post will provide leadership in the operational management of the team and be responsible for the clinical delivery of dietetics across the mental health inpatient wards in Derbyshire. 

About us: We receive a range of referrals for people who are receiving assessment and treatment of their mental health and require support with their nutrition, including nutrition support, disordered eating, weight management, diabetes and supporting service users with increased cardiovascular risk.

The successful applicant will join a small and friendly team of dietitians working in the inpatient mental health dietetics service and be part of a wider group of senior dietitians working in services across the trust including community adult and CAMHS eating disorders services and forensic mental health services for professional support. 

The post will be based at the Kingsway Hospital in Derby; however, ability to travel to various locations across Derbyshire is required. The service also covers inpatient mental health wards in North Derbyshire and the post could be part based in Chesterfield on request.

Main duties of the job

·       Operational leadership and management inpatient dietetic service including service development/provision, leading team meetings, managing staffing and non-staffing related budgets, recruitment, training, staff sickness/absence, service deployment across sites, service risk assessment, meeting service operational KPI/targets, provide management and clinical supervision

·       Provide highly specialist knowledge, skills and advice to service users

·       Be a source of expertise for staff and other professionals as part of the wider inpatient multi-disciplinary teams

·       Use evidence-based, person- centred principles to provide highly specialised assessment, diagnosis, planning, evaluation and co-ordination of dietetic interventions

·       Carry a defined clinical caseload (based on demand) and support other dietitians within the team

·       Be responsible for the development and delivery of nutritional training to other health care professionals.

·       Lead on catering improvement projects/meeting hospital food standards as service capacity allows

·       Involvement in student training

·       Identify, initiate and implement service development projects including audit, contribute to the development of policies and procedures relating to nutritional care and developing guidelines for the dietetic service using evidenced based practice

·       Attend the inpatient nutrition steering group to represent dietetics

·       Attend Operational meetings

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Responsible for the delivery of a specialist dietitian service for people admitted to a mental health inpatient or 24-hour care unit provided by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (DHcFT).
  • Provide supervision, line management and leadership to the inpatient mental health dietetics team provided by DHcFT. This includes operational and clinical leadership.
  • To lead the mental health dietetics service including meeting key performance indicators and demonstrating effectiveness by using outcome measures.
  • To contribute to the overall development, delivery and standards of nutritional care delivered across mental health inpatient services and the hospital setting.
  • To champion the importance of excellent nutritional care and physical health to other health care professionals across the directorate and inpatient mental health settings. This includes non-dietetic staff training and joined up working.
  • To provide an evidenced based service for patients referred to the mental health dietetics service including developing and ensuring delivery of relevant training plans within the mental health dietetics team.
  • To produce reports as required, for example to commissioners and relevant committees.

Person specification

Attainment/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or post graduate qualification in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Registered Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of attendance on specialist short courses and advanced clinical skills training, up to Masters level equivalent, relevant to specialist field

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable and relevant post qualification experience, with significant post-graduate experience working in adults Mental Health Dietetics
  • Demonstration of highly specialist knowledge in this field, as evidenced by higher degree level qualification in clinical specialism, underpinned by clinical research and innovative current evidence-based practice
Desirable criteria
  • Experience or qualification in motivational interviewing/behavioural change approach
