An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fully qualified Senior Anatomical Pathology Technician to join the mortuary team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. Consideration will be taken for a candidate who is currently working toward their Diploma/level 4 qualification. (Annex 21 of AfC will apply in this instance)

The posts have been established to support Mortuary Service Manager & team of APT’s and APT/MEO’s in the organisation of a safe, secure, effective and comprehensive mortuary, post mortem and Medical Examiner’s office/service for the needs of the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the wider community.

(This post is provided by Derbyshire Pathology, a contracted joint venture between Chesterfield Royal Hospital and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton).

To assist the Service Manager and the Team of APT's and APT/MEO's in the running of a safe, secure, effective and comprehensive mortuary, post mortem examination and medical examiner service for the needs of the hospital, HM Coroner and the Community and to ensure that deceased patients and their relatives are treated with dignity and respect at all times.

To carry out all mortuary functions in line with departmental operating procedures. Assist medical and technical staff with post mortem examinations, both routine and high-risk cases including external examination and PM preparation in line with case history including skilful reconstruction of the deceased post examination. To participate in an on call rota.

Qualifications

  • Hold the Certificate & Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (RSPHH) or level 3 & level 4 diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (ideally with post diploma/level 4 experience)
  • Good basic general education, including science (4 x GCSE grade C or above – including a science)

  • Health and Safety training
  • Bereavement training

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of working with people in sensitive and emotional situations.
  • Broad experience of the mortuary environment and working with the deceased and bereaved
  • Experience of working to and writing procedures & guidelines
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Notification of Death Regulations 2019
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Coroner & Justice Act 2009
  • Knowledge & Understanding of the Human Tissue Act and codes of practice.

  • Knowledge of the special requirements of various faith groups and respect for equality and diversity of issues around formalities following a death.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting with multi-disciplinary teams across organisational boundaries.
