Job overview

We are looking for a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our acute hospital team. These posts are open to newly qualified Speech and Language Therapists, as well as those who already have some experience in a previous post.

We are looking for a reflective practitioner, who works well in a team, and has good organisational, time management and communication skills.

We will provide regular support and preceptorship,  clinical supervision and the opportunity to further develop your clinical skills through internal and external training.

There will be opportunities to develop into out-patient clinical practice in ENT/voice disorders if interested.

There is scope to increase hours in future.

Main duties of the job

To provide a designated Speech and Language Therapy service to the acute and community hospital wards, working as part of the Speech and Language Therapy team.

To liaise with colleagues and other professionals with the multi-disciplinary team.

To work with a variety of patients in a hospital setting, including stroke rehabilitation, general medicine, frailty, ENT etc.

To liaise with colleagues for specialist opinion, including video fluoroscopy assessments.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration
  • Recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy - degree or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of RCSLT
  • Dysphagia competency.
  • Member of relevant CEN.

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Undergraduate/post-graduate experience of working with adults with a range of communication difficulties and using a variety of assessments.
  • Knowledge of different ways to access clinical information.
  • Evidence of clinical reasoning and evidence-based patient intervention.
  • Knowledge of alternative methods of communication.
  • CPD portfolio of evidence relevant to the post.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting.
  • Liaison with other agencies and staff groups.
  • Bedside assessment of dysphagia.
  • Awareness of NHS strategy and audit (e.g., SSNAP).

Skills & Ability

Essential criteria
  • Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines, be flexible and reliable in rapidly changing environment.
  • Able to work as part of local team and the wider MDT.
  • Knowledge of the environmental impact on communication and swallowing.
  • Good administrative skills, including the ability to use various computer applications.
