University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a Consultant in Colorectal Surgery.

Based at the Queen's Hospital site in Burton on Trent, the colorectal department provides a full range of inpatient elective and non-elective operating services, outpatient clinics and day case facilities.

There are currently 6 Lower Gastrointestinal surgeons based within the unit,  and a further 3 Upper Gastrointestinal surgeons, supported by a team of registrars, specialty doctors, junior doctors and clinical nurse specialists.  We are currently exploring the possibilities of developing robotic surgery on this site.  We run a TAMIS and abdominal wall reconstruction service.

We are looking for someone experienced in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and a high standard of clinical skills.  Experience of pelvic floor disorders would be an advantage.

This post will be based across Queen's Hospital Burton and peripheral hospitals in Tamworth and Lichfield delivering a range of outpatient and inpatient services, both on site and at outreach clinics.  The post holder will also provide emergency cover as part of a 1 in 8 consultant rota.

  • Provision with General & Colorectal consultant colleagues of a General & Colorectal service for Staffordshire and the surrounding areas, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department
  • Responsibility for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to & teaching of trainee staff
  • Provision of an out of hours general and colorectal service with consultant colleagues including on-call commitments
  • Cover for consultant colleagues annual leave and other authorised absence, including care of patients and supervision of trainee doctors (a minimum of 6 weeks notice is to be given for all leave requests)
  • Responsibility for the professional supervision, training and management of trainee medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity locally & nationally as appropriate
  • Participation in medical audit under local arrangements, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD
  • Involvement in research & supervision of trainees in audit / research
  • Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate
  • Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of the Trust e.g. domiciliary consultations or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, e.g. the prison service.  (This excludes work done under direct arrangements between an individual Consultant & a third party, e.g. Category 2)
  • Participation in Medical Student Teaching Programmes & Examinations
  • Responsibility for implementing Infection Control Policies

  • Medically qualified and possess FRCS
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice at date of Commencement OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a CESR application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC.
