Job overview

Based at Queens Hospital in Burton, we are appointing a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4 level) within our Stroke team.  This will be a full-time, fixed-term service appointment for 1 year with a possibility of extension.  Applications for less than full-time working patterns are welcome.    

You will be based within the Department of Stroke Medicine and work with consultants, advanced care practitioners (ACPs), Therapists and Discharge Support Officers to deliver a responsive service to medical patients throughout the hospital. Your speciality team will give you consistent support and further learning opportunities.

Main duties of the job

The post can be tailored to individual requirements but centres upon the provision of care to the Stroke Medicine/General Medicine teams. There is scope to access opportunities that enable you to fulfil the ‘alternative certificate’ required for stage 2 training (critical care training opportunities are not available)

One day per week (on average) can be spent performing QIP/teaching/attending clinics etc. The postholder will do at least one Stroke clinic a week.  The department runs a number of specialist clinics such as TIA clinics which the postholder may be able to attend depending on their training needs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The in-patient medical division based at Royal Derby Hospital (RDH)/Queens Hospital Burton (QHB) offers a high standard of care, across a number of Medical Specialities for the population of Derbyshire, Staffordshire and the surrounding areas with dedicated nursing and therapy staff.  

The bed-holding specialities with Specialist Medicine Business Unit 1 consist of Respiratory, Cardiology, Neurology, Stroke, Dermatology and Department of Medicine for the Elderly (DME). Specialist Medicine Business Unit 2 consists of Gastroenterology, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Rheumatology and Renal Services.

Queen’s Hospital is a vibrant District General Hospital situated in the East Staffordshire town of Burton upon Trent. The hospital is well-embedded in the local community which values its local hospital very highly. The hospital offers a variety of facilities including 420 beds, an Emergency Department, 9 operating theatres, 2 MRI scanners and 2 CT scanners.

QHB is recognised for its excellent training in General Medicine and a holistic approach to the care of patients from admission to discharge.

We believe that at UHDB, we can offer excellent medical training in internal medicine. We remain committed to providing posts that facilitate not only clinical training but also add value in terms of simulation, management and leadership development.

Working in Stroke services at QHB provides access to the training opportunities afforded by being part of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team, including specialist stroke consultants, neuroradiology, vascular radiology, and vascular surgery, with training and educational opportunities on both RDH and QHB sites. Our core team includes Clinical Nurse Specialists, a research coordinator, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists – we are a genuinely multidisciplinary team.

Training opportunities include:

  • ​Inpatient ward of patients with both Acute stroke and General Medicine conditions
  • Stroke and TIA clinics delivered at QHB
  • Working closely with the Stroke team at RDH to ensure the smooth and safe transition of patients from the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit to the Acute phase of care in QHB for the Staffordshire catchment area patients.
  • Working closely with therapy teams to ensure patients are receiving the right rehab for their stroke recovery needs.

SCFs in Stroke have the opportunity to benefit from working within the new Stroke pathway operating across Derbyshire and East Staffordshire. QHB is the partner site to the Hyperacute Stroke Unit at the RDH and provides care to patients recovering from stroke, following their initial 72 hours at the RDH. Patients at QHB require attentive stroke specific medical care, investigation for causes of stroke and close MDT working with both inpatient and community rehabilitation services. There are opportunities for you to join the hyperacute/thrombolysis team at RDH on a 1:7 weeks basis to gain thrombolysis experience (Mon-Fri   9-5 pm)

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Advanced Life Support certification
  • Part 1 MRCP

  • Part 2 written and PACES MRCP

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice at time of application
  • A minimum 4 years post qualification medical experience in the UK or abroad, including experience in Acute Medicine/ Medical specialities at time of application
  • Minimum 6 months NHS experience within the last 2 years
