Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit an enthusiastic Band 6, Deputy ward manager/Sister to work as part of the team on the Ellerbeck Ward. The post is a 37.5 hours per week position, which will cover a range of shifts working  7 days a week all year round.

This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic and motivated registered nurse who is looking to develop their clinical skills and expertise in caring for patients on a busy ward environment. Essential working with the wider multi-disciplinary team and also to provide clinical leadership and act as a role model to excel in this role, excellent communication skills are required.

The aim is to integrate and work closely with other teams to facilitate hospital discharges, take care of patients as they are nearing their end of life and encourage and promote independence & rehabilitation for patients on the ward.

Main duties of the job

As the deputy on the ward you will be expected to provide senior leadership to the team and work closely with the ward manager. Take charge in the absence of the ward manager, participate in sickness absence management, complete appraisals, management superversion, and wellbeing conversations with your team.

You will be required to supervise qualified and unqualified staff within the ward, and will be expected to delegate work safely considering skill mix and the complexity of clients. You will also be expected to manage safeguarding referrals, continuing care assessments and complete risk assessments.

You will be responsible for admission and safe discharges of patients onto the ward, liaising with families and all members of the MDT involved in the patient journey. You will chair ward MDT's, patient discharge or safeguarding meetings and lead on SAFER board rounds. You will ensure  standards for documentation and record keeping are in line with the NMC code.

You will participate in audits, improvement plans and clinical reviews as delegated by the ward manager.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to use initiative, prioritise effectively
  • Demonstrate evidence to work as part of a team

  • Evidence of clinical/professional development
  • Previous experience of a nurse in a health care setting
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of changing health agenda and impact for community nursing
  • Demonstrable recent Nursing experience.

  • Post registration clinical skills (i.e. IV Cannulation and admin)
  • Operational management of a team

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Level 1 registered nursing qualifications

  • Post Registration qualification in teaching/assessing (ENB 998/NST 307)
