Job overview

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust requires a highly motivated, reliable and flexible Mechanical Craftsperson  to work as a key member of its Estates Team at its West Cumberland Hospital site located at Whitehaven in West Cumbria. The role is to undertake preventative maintenance and repair work to mechanical systems to ensure the site is well maintained and safe for the patients, staff and visitors who use it.

The Estates Department of the West Cumberland Hospital is a small department who maintain the buildings, grounds and services required to keep the hospital running. The post is Monday to Friday 08.00 to 16.00 but alternative hours are sometimes required to maintain the service as well as shift cover when necessary.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be involved in routine maintenance and repair work of the building and its services, plant and machinery,  as well as fixtures and fittings to ensure the hospital is clean tidy and safe.

The applicant must have completed a recognised apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline and be versatile due to the varied nature of the work which will include hot and cold water systems, heating systems, ventilation systems and medical gas pipeline systems.

The role of Mechanical Craftsperson is based at Whitehaven maintaining the buildings and services at the West Cumberland Hospital site. The applicant must be able to work under his/her own initiative and have good interpersonal skills both in working within the team as well as in ward areas and with members of the general public.

The West Cumberland Hospital site is currently undergoing re-development work where a new wing is being built to relocate and upgrade some wards and services into more modern surroundings. The applicant will need to learn about and understand new systems when they come on line.
