Job overview

Epilepsy is a serious neurological condition that can affect anyone, at any age and 
from any walk of life and affects around one in every 100 people in the UK. The 
consequences of an epilepsy diagnosis are severe and wide-reaching. Diagnosis 
can result in the loss of a driving licence and loss of employment. It can also 
affect someone’s education and employment prospects, and lead to an increased 
degree of social isolation.
The post of the Epilepsy Specialist Nurse would involve help to promote and lead 
good practice in the diagnosis, management and treatment of adults who live with 
epilepsy. This would also involve providing a seamless, high quality service in 
providing support, advice and education to, their families and carers.
They would also be expected to work in collaboration with the wider 
Multidisciplinary Team involved in epilepsy and maintain their own continuing 
professional development

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice
 To provide and manage an expert specialist nursing service for adults with 
epilepsy.
 To develop, organise and manage the provision of nurse led clinics for 
adults with epilepsy across Cumbria
 To provide expert nursing advice and support to patients, their families and 
other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through treatment
 To ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence based nursing care, 
assessing health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families and 
other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care.

On 28 November 2020, the new Disclosure and Barring Service filtering rules will come into effect.

The changes mean that:

Standard DBS check £21.50, Enhanced DBS check £49.50 + any admin costs.

The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

 

Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Enhanced Check: £38 + administration cost of £3.90 = £41.90. Deducted at £11.90 from 1st month salary and £10 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration
  • Higher Degree (MSc) or equivalent in a health related subject, or working towards
  • Strong Leadership skills
Desirable criteria
  • Expert clinical skills relevant to nursing care for adult patients with epilepsy
  • Experience in Neurology/Epilepsy Setting
  • Neurology Training
  • 300 Nurse prescribing certificate
  • Nurse Prescribing Certificate

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to build up a rapport with patients and the MDT
  • Experience in providing counselling to clients/carers
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant, demonstrable experience in specialty area

Skills and Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Ability to impart complex information to patients, relatives and carers, with different levels of understanding.
  • Ability to undertake and promote evidence based practice
  • Ability to lead, co-ordinate and motivate.
  • Ability to work autonomously or as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to chair and facilitate meetings.  Computer literacy.  Basic Counselling skills.  Experience of delivering presentations
  • Knowledge of Vulnerable Adults Procedures and Adults under Mental Capacity Act

  • Mentoring of junior members of staff and students.
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills or willingness to develop these.
