Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of a Urology Specialist Doctor at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust (UHMBT). This is a permanent full time post in Urology working together in conjunction with 5 Consultants (with a further Consultant to be appointed following recruitment process), an Associate Specialist and  4 Speciality Doctors (with a further 2 to be appointed following interviews). 

The post holder will work as part of the Urology team to provide a high quality Urology service that aims to prove excellent patient care. This includes  delivery of out-patients, emergency work, day-case and inpatient services independently.  The post holder will be expected to manage their own work programme within the broad parameters of department policies and procedures, and will be responsible for determining the associated work activities using their initiative.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work across all of our hospital sites on a 7-week rota basis alongside their Consultant/Associate Specialist colleagues. The post holder will also be expected to take on on-call responsibilities and will be part of the Middle Grade Doctor 1:6 on-call rota progressing to the Consultant 1:7 on call rota supported by the middle grade doctors.

As a guide, for the 10PA job plan, this will include independent new patient ‘one-stop’ clinics, follow up clinics, theatre lists, on-call, an admin session and an SPA session. You will have the opportunity to develop a sub speciality interest of your choice.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at time of appointment
  • Medical Degree from a recognised university
  • FRCS (Urol) or recognised equivalent qualification
  • Meets the criteria set out in the Specialist grade generic capabilities framework
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree
  • Specialist Registration

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completed a minimum of 12 years medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in Urology in the Speciality Doctor and/or closed SAS grades
  • Equivalent years experience in relevant speciality from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards a CESR
  • Independent practice in Urology
