Job overview
Providing a high quality phlebotomy service for the inpatients of Royal Lancaster Infirmary. The hours of work are 31 hours per week which will require being part of a rota to work four hour shifts on weekends and bank holidays.
Previous phlebotomy experience is desirable.

Main duties of the job
Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample. Collection of sample(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures. Ensuring samples are collected into appropriate containers. Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity. Checking patient identification against records and confirming with patient whenever possible. Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion. Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff. Notifying the ward staff of any significant patient issues.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1.Comply with local and national policies for the safe collection of blood by venepuncture or
capillary sampling.
2. Preparation of equipment and the correct disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
3. Perform duties in accordance with Trust and Pathology Health and Safety at work Policies.
4. Ensure that a constantly high standard of care and service is maintained to patients, members of
staff and the general public (in accordance with Trust and Pathology policies).
5. Work flexibly, including weekdays, weekends and Bank Holidays as contracted.
6.Maintenance of personal training log in conjunction with the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
7.Maintain awareness of future needs and contribute towards service developments.
