Job overview

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust (UHMB) provides health care in a stunning area of the UK. We cover large portions of the Lake District (UNESCO world heritage site), Lune Valley, Forest of Bowland (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It is an ideal location for those enjoying the outdoors, with excellent local schools and rail networks providing easy access to London and Manchester.

Education is important in the city, the Royal Lancaster Grammar School is consistently voted one of the top state grammar schools in the country and Lancaster University, which has its own medical school was voted Sunday Times University of the year 2018. Medical students from the University Of Lancaster attend all sites for clinical experience.

Whilst the Trust has been under the spotlight in the past, it has been heralded recently as an example to the rest of the NHS by its remarkable transformation into a leading light in patient safety. The Trust provides an extensive range of acute, emergency and continuing care to a population of 350,000 in South Cumbria and North Lancashire. In 2017 /2018/ 2021 and  2023 the RCOG recognised us in the TEF results as highly commended for Professional development, placing us in the top 10 trusts in the country.

Main duties of the job

You will work across all Consultant teams.  Your duties  will include attending antenatal and gynaecology clinics, the care of patients on the ante natal and post-natal wards, the admission and treatment of both routine and emergency cases and the preparation of patients for theatres as well as post operative care.

You will  expected to perform labour ward and gynaecological procedures according to unit guidelines.

You will also have the opportunity to attend Specialist clinics.  These include Colposcopy, hysteroscopy, urgent cancer referral and diabetic pregnancy clinics

Attendance and participation in the monthly Audit Meeting will be required.

It is expected that you will participate in the teaching of junior doctors and medical students.

There will be third, fourth and fifth year students from Liverpool and Lancaster medical schools rotating through the department. You will be  encouraged to teach them informally, and give them opportunities to clerk patients and present their histories.

Full shift rota.  The nights are Friday to Sunday 1:6 and 1:10 day time weekends with prospective cover for holidays ( this can vary depending on the number of doctors on rota) with Long days from 9.00 am to 21.15 pm

 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

The post is based in the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department based in the Women’s Unit at Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI). RLI is a busy District General Hospital serving the vibrant University town of Lancaster. The hospital is walking distance from the town centre and train station.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

We provide services for Children & Young People with additional needs. The service is community based and delivered from Longlands Child Development Centre, with satellite clinics in the wider community. Other services such as paediatric therapy, psychology ICNT & Therapies Children's Community Nursing, Hearing, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, Nursing and Therapy teams & our specialist health visitors are also located at Longlands Children’s Development Centre.

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
  • MRCOG part 1
Desirable criteria
  • MRCOG part 2

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 3 years post Foundation Training experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Good labour ward experience
Desirable criteria
  • Good understanding of principles of audit

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to perform vaginal instrumental delivery independently
  • Able to perform caesarean section independently
  • Able to perform diagnostic laparoscopy independently
  • Able to interpret CTG
Desirable criteria
