Job overview

Liaise with senior nurse, patient flow co-ordinator, admissions
lounge and MDT regarding admission, discharges and transfers of
patients to ensure patients admitted as scheduled.
To provide a welcoming and professional approach to all members
of the public and staff attending the ward.
Deal with sensitive, confidential information and queries regarding
patients on ward in a sympathetic and reassuring manner.
Provide advice and support to both new and existing members of
the MDT.
To take the lead for the management and organisation of patient
records within the clinical area, including the management of the
Lorenzo system. Train how to input information into the system,
understand the information held within it and disseminate to other
staff members as required.
To work with minimal supervision providing clerical and
administrative support to the ward team.

Main duties of the job

To support the nursing team with the admission and discharge of patients.  

Administration activities such as filing, answering the telephone.

Ensure patient records are up to date on IT system.

Liaise with external services such as booking appointments and transport.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To receive, welcome and guide patients and visitors to the ward/department.


To maintain and update paper-based and information technology records and information as required.


To respond to requests for general information.


To collect and deliver requests to other hospital departments eg pharmacy, radiology etc.


To provide information to patients on how to make a complaint/compliment and to forward these to the relevant person/department.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good General Education
  • Basic Numeracy and Literacy

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Have a demonstrable understanding of general office equipment
  • Knowledge of clerical/admin systems and processes i.e Lorenzo
Desirable criteria
  • Previous clerical experience within healthcare/office setting

Skills, Ability and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to be assertive and use initiative whilst also following instruction from senior staff
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of the NHS structure and current issues
