Job overview

An opportunity has arisen in the Blood Sciences Department at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust for a State Registered, Specialist Biomedical Scientists based in the Biochemistry laboratory on our Royal Lancaster Infirmary site in Lancaster, Lancashire. The post requires participation in the out of hours rota.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust is composed of three main hospital sites: Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital covering a wide geographical area encompassing North Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Main duties of the job

The Blood Science laboratories across the Trust work closely together to provide an efficient, high quality service utilising common analytical platforms and IT systems provided through a managed service contract with Beckman Coulter UK.

The department is committed to continuous development and quality improvement, and you must be equally committed to these principles.

There will be opportunities available for further developing your skills in all aspects of Blood Sciences to enable to you fulfil your potential and further your career.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

UHMBT Pathology is working in collaboration with other providers in Lancashire and South Cumbria in order to provide a streamlined single pathology service for 1.6 million people to secure our services for the future.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Biomedical Sciences (Hons) degree or equivalent qualification
  • HCPC registration
  • Specialist portfolio in Biochemistry or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed technical and scientific skills
  • Proven ability to manage resources effectively
  • Evidence of highly developed written and oral communication skills in a variety of settings.
  • Experience of working within a team
  • Full understanding and awareness of the Standards for accreditation of medical laboratories
  • NHS or other public sector experience
  • Quality management experience
