Job overview
We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic, well-motivated Secretary to join our Team providing comprehensive secretarial support to the Gastroenterology team at Royal Lancaster Infirmary. Current or recent Secretarial experience, with a typing qualification at RSA II or equivalent, is essential together with a good standard of English. Knowledge of medical terminology and IT systems would be an advantage, although training will be given.
You will be required to work flexibly, the successful candidate will possess excellent communication and organisational skills and have the ability to work well in a Team and adapt to change as required. The maintenance of patient confidentiality and excellent customer care skills are essential.
Main duties of the job
This is an ideal opportunity for personal development enabling the post holder to develop their skills and knowledge working alongside medical and nursing staff within this busy, but friendly environment.
1. To provide a full secretarial service for the relevant departments, ensuring clinic letters, discharge summaries, medical reports are accurately typed using digital dictation within a 5-day turnaround
2. To work in close liaison with Team Leaders, medical staff/ clinicians to ensure that the patient’s 18 week journey is not breached and targets are met.
3. Provide administration and secretarial support for the relevant speciality meetings which may require accurate minute taking
6. Liaise and mediate between patients, relatives, General Practitioners and all medical staff, exercising initiative and excellent interpersonal skills to ensure that such contact is sensitive, empathetic and effective.
7. To work cohesively as a team in a supportive environment.
8. Be able to work flexibly across the workforce model within medicine as a whole.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- ECDL or recognised typing qualification or relevant experience
- GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
- Audio typewriting or equivalent qualification or experience
