Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic experienced Band 5 Staff Nurse to become part of a well-established and progressive Pre-operative Assessment Service (POA).

The POA Service provides a facility which is primarily designed to assess  elective surgical patients for fitness for anaesthetic and surgery.

It is a Nurse Led Service and the ideal candidate will be an experienced nurse post qualified with a holistic approach to care, excellent communication and organisational skills; and have the ability to work autonomously within their scope of practice, following the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), National Service Framework guidelines (NSF), national and local trust guidelines.

There is also the opportunity to work on other sites as and when needed.

Main duties of the job

You will be involved with multiple forms of communication, and different pathways to surgery, to help reduce the number of on day cancellations and to ensure a positive patient experience.

The role will include undertaking relevant assessments, physical airway / heart and lung assessments, requesting tests, providing advice and health promotion,  helping to ensure our patients are on the correct pathway for surgery and are fully informed about the process.

You will need to be organised, thorough, efficient and have excellent communication and documentation skills.  Effective team working is essential for this role.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
