Would you like to join a team of nurses who are supported by a multidisciplinary team ensuring patients are discharged safely back to the community following orthopaedic surgery?
At Westmorland General Hospital we have a dedicated Inpatient Surgical Unit which comprises elective surgery (Ward 7) and rehabilitation following trauma surgery (Ward 6).
An opportunity for a Band 5 Registered Nurse to work on Ward 7 in a fixed term contract has become available to work alongside our skilled and dedicated Team at Westmorland General Hospital. The Unit specialises mainly in Total Hip and Knee Replacement surgery, Breast surgery and Urology. This will involve a variety of shifts to work both, days and nights 7 days a week. There may be occasions where you are required to work on the rehabilitation ward where full support will be given.
Main duties of the job
We expect staff to work together as a team to achieve the best outcomes; you will be encouraged to work with your manager to identify an individual competency pack which will be relevant to the area in which you intend to work and to meet your learning needs.
Newly qualified Band 5 nurses are welcomed to apply; you can work towards Band 5 competencies & develop extended roles. Full support for Preceptorship will be given.
Anyone newly appointed to the trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.

Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- 1st level Registered Nurse
- Willingness to undertake Teaching Qualification, Mentoring /assessing qualification, NVQ Assessors Award
Desirable criteria
- Post registration clinical course appropriate to area.
- ECDL or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Working within a multidisciplinary team
- Evidence of recent professional development.
- Experience of establishing effective communication.
- Experience of implementing change.
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience within designated area.
- Experience of mentoring and assessing junior staff.
- Experience as shift team leader.
