Senior Improvement Specialist

Job overview

The post holder will have a track record of outstanding operational and/or clinical experience in achieving measurable clinical and operational improvements to NHS services, pathways and processes.

The purpose of the role is to lead on the Trust’s planned and unplanned care improvement programmes in the:

 Development of complex value streams (large scale improvement initiatives) which will deliver sustainable improvement, organisational and cultural change;

Application of extensive operational and/or clinical experience in the delivery of clinical service improvement, and expert education and training of staff at all levels of the organisation in using improvement methodologies

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for collaborating with clinical and operational leaders at all levels to drive sustainable continuous improvement processes through the organisation.  This will include respectfully challenging the status quo in order to consistently deliver improvements in our processes and the care we provide.
  • Act as the lead for the planned and/or unplanned elements of the Trust’s Improvement Plan, interpreting & analysing highly complex internal and external performance data in order to support decision-making and make recommendations via reports to Executives/SLT for improved performance / service re-design
    Attend meetings as required in order to advise Executives/SLT on progress and trajectories for improvement, as well as potential solutions and adjustment to plans to ensure achievement of Trust improvement strategies.
  • Co-ordinate and support senior members of Collaboratives to create and monitor improvement plans, and agree & monitor outcome measures, ensuring they remain accountable for continued improvement,
  • Make presentations to large groups of staff at all levels, setting out highly contentious and sensitive or contentious information to encourage teams support improvement plans, using motivational skills where there may be resistance to change.
  • Develop and deliver long term, Trust-wide strategies focused on performance & service improvement, which support new ways of working and facilitates collaborative working across the Trust

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent level of experience
  • Masters qualification in relevant subject area or equivalent knowledge and experience within a specifically focused role
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to the role
Desirable criteria
  • Project management qualification
  • improvement methodology/methodologies or other relevant experience (ie advanced Lean qualification or QSIR Associate Accreditation)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive operational and/or clinical experience in identifying barriers to improvement in systems, processes and pathways and utilising operational and/or clinical change experience to work with teams to deliver timely and measurable improvements
  • Extensive experience of development and successful implementation of improvement methodologies, tools and techniques in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Significant experience of leading complex improvement/transformation programmes with successful outcomes using improvement methodologies in an NHS Trust setting
  • Significant experience of leading complex and cross functional teams in a large and complex organisation
  • Extensive experience of analysing, interpreting and reporting data and information to draw conclusions and make recommendations which inform improvement work streams and to demonstrate progress and success
  • Significant experience of facilitating and undertaking improvement work across health and social care system partners
  • Significant experience in developing, delivering and evaluating improvement training programmes and associated resources suitable for use within and outside of the Trust
