Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP)

The ACCP will work autonomously, at an advanced level on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to assess, diagnose and treat critically ill (Level 1-3) patients, performing daily reviews of patients on the ICU/HDU alongside the multidisciplinary team (MDT), led by the ICU Consultant. The ACCP will also review patients in other areas of the hospital where patients have been referred to the critical care team and attend trauma calls when needed

- Undertake an extensive assessment of the critically ill patient, including taking a history and completing a clinical examination
- Perform or order diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/investigations
- Recognise which medications are required in a range of physiological abnormalities within the critical care sphere, and be able to seek and justify their prescription appropriately
- Prescribe independently (when legally permitted) or use PGD’s to review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice, national practice & protocols, and within scope of practice to optimise the patient’s treatment
- Initiate and manage a clinical treatment plan
- Perform invasive procedures, advanced airway skills, vascular access and other practical skills within the level of clinical competence
- Teach and educate members of the multi-professional team
- Undertake internal and inter-hospital transfers of critically ill patients
- Contribute to the development of the Advanced Critical Care Practitioner role

Qualifications

- Post graduate diploma to master’s level (level 7) in Advanced Critical Care Practice
- Registered nurse / physiotherapist / operating department practitioners with active registration
- Substantial broad experience relevant to critical care
- Degree qualification related to specialist area of practice
- To recognise which medications are required in a range of physiological abnormalities within the critical care sphere, and be able to seek prescription appropriately
- Recognised teaching qualification e.g. HLLM 5/6 001
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- IT skills
- ALS certificate

- Master’s degree in Advanced Clinical Skills (ACCP)
- EPLS and ATLS certificate
- Non-medical prescribing qualification (subject to non-medical prescribing qualification once available)
- Essential IT skills (EITS) or equivalent.
Experience

- Extensive critical care experience and/or experience at working at a senior level
- Experience of effectively managing people and resources
- Clinical care, assessment, diagnosis and care planning experience
