The role of the Advanced Musculoskeletal Practitioner is multi-faceted, incorporating key functions such as policy and standards development, practice development, education, research and professional development.  The aim is for Practitioners to lead and be the single point of contact/access for the provision of cost effective, efficient, quality services that meet the needs of patients with MSK conditions.

The post holder will be committed to working at advanced practice level working across the four pillars of Advanced Practice as defined by the Health Education England multi-professional framework (2017). 

The post holder will have the responsibility for undertaking speciality services for patients who require diagnosis/assessment and/or investigation and/or treatment of a wide range of MSK foot and ankle conditions.

The post holder will act autonomously in the management of an often complex and chronic caseload. They will be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment planning for these patients. This will involve use of imaging and investigations and analysis/interpretation of results. It will involve knowledge of all possible multi-disciplinary treatment pathways and appropriate referral to these pathways. 

The post holder will provide clinical and professional support, information and advice to patients, carers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team on all aspects of the service and ongoing holistic patient care.

Dependant upon the level of experience of the successful candidate and the offer of employment after interviews the Job Description and responsibilities vary between the B7 Trainee post or the B8a Accredited Advanced MSK Practitioner posts 

 

  • Undertake the advanced assessment and treatment of patients within the specialty using advanced theoretical and practical knowledge. 

§  Undertake a lead role in the planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the IMSK Pathway. 

§  Identify patients where injection therapy or surgical intervention is appropriate.

§  Evaluate working practices within the IMSK service through the use of evidence based practice, audit, research and outcome measures.  

§  Act as a clinical mentor and/or educator to less experienced clinicians, and other members of staff involved with the MSK pathway.

§  Undertake analysis of medical investigations, such as MRI, where judgements regarding a range of clinical issues and/or highly complex patient conditions will have to be made. 

§  Seek advice and liaise with Consultants when necessary.

§  Respond to GP enquires advising on all aspects of patient management.

§  Encourage the multi-disciplinary teams to find new ways of service delivery for patients where applicable, and take a lead in implementing change.

§  Act as a leadership role model and demonstrate expert knowledge and high standards of clinical practice.

  • Post graduate specialist training/experience to Masters level in relevant field or equivalent
  • Valid registration with professional regulatory body (e.g. HCPC, NMC)
  • Prior accreditation with the NHS England Centre for advancing practice
  • On-going evidence of continued professional development within the specialist field
  • Relevant validated clinical courses at specialist/advanced level
