Job overview

  • Support in the delivery of high standards of patient care with particular responsibility for the setting and monitoring of these standards
  • Provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence within the clinical area of responsibility for patients and their families / carers and staff, providing assistance, advice and support
  • Provide effective leadership and line management for all staff
  • Have overall responsibility for the operational day-to-day running of defined clinical areas including bed management

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure that the clinical environments meet national required standards
  • Monitor defined clinical areas resources within agreed budgets
  • Contribute to the corporate nursing agenda
  • Deputise for the Deputy/Associate Director of Nursing when required
  • To support the delivery of major targets in the NHS plan to improve access to and the quality of patient services
  • To test and implement new ways of working to improve patient services
  • Responsible for proposing, formulating and implementing departmental policies

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Degree or equivalent
  • Evidence of recent study at Masters/post grad level or willingness to undertake
  • Current UK NMC regisitration
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership Course or equivalent.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent management and leadership experience at band 7 or above
  • Experience of managing HR issues
  • Budget management
  • Understanding of safeguarding issues

Skills, ability & knowledge
