Job overview
Applications are invited from enthusiastic, well-motivated Pharmacists to be the Specialist pharmacist for the pharmaceutical care service provided to the Women & Children’s Services (maternity, paediatric and neonatal units) at Furness General Hospital.
Applicants should hold a post Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy, must be registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC and have relevant experience.
Applicants should ideally have, or be prepared to work towards becoming an independent, prescribing practitioner in order to manage medication throughout the patient’s stay and ensure a high quality and efficient pharmacy service.
Full time, part time, flexible hours and part time hours in addition to a current role are available.
Main duties of the job
This post has weekend working and bank holiday commitments. On-call weekday nights are currently approximately once per month.
Develop the provision of clinical pharmacy services to the Women & Children’s Services (maternity, paediatric and neonatal units) in accordance to the needs of the user and the required standards of quality and professional practice.
Provide expert advice and guidance on the safe and effective use of medicines, complete clinical reviews and medicine reconciliation follow ups. Review and update relevant policies and train other staff in this area.
Full training in this specialist area will be given to the successful applicant.
You must be highly motivated and able to demonstrate leadership skills and manage conflicting demands on your time. You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
You will also provide a clinical pharmacy service to allocated wards on the Furness General site as part of a rotation.
The UHMB pharmacy department looks to the future and has recently implemented projects such as electronic prescribing for inpatients across all specialities on all sites. We have a fully electronic patient record.
This post will be based at the Furness General Hospital site, however, there may be a requirement for Cross Bay working when required.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Masters degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
- Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy
- Registrations a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council(this requires completion of pre-registration year)
- Fulfilment of mandatory Continuous Professional Development requirements
Desirable criteria
- Registration with Royal Pharmaceutical Society
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive hospital pharmacy experience
- Experience of communicating with senior medical
- Experience of clinical audit/drug use review
- Experience of supervision and teaching of staff
Desirable criteria
- Experience of successfully managing change
- Experience of communicating with senior management staff
