An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with relevant skills, experience and knowledge to join the Maternity Team at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB).
 
Morecambe Bay is one of the most picturesque parts of the country with the Lake District on our doorstep.
 
The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner who will offer support knowledge, and advice to newly qualified midwives, whilst in preceptorship, Internationally Educated midwives within their first year of appointment and to new starters/returners during their induction and supernumerary period.
 
You will be working as part of Specialist midwifery team which works across the three main hospital sites - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow-in-Furness, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal but your focus will be Recruitment and Retention ,  Clinical Skills and Support of midwives.
 
You can choose the site where you would prefer to be based, but there will be an expectation that you travel to the other sites as required.

 

Main duties of the job

As the Recruitment and Retention, Clinical Skills and Support of midwives. , the post holder will:
Be responsible for offering a robust offer of support to a newly qualified midwives whilst in preceptorship, internationally educated midwives within their first year of appointment, and to new Starters/Returners during their induction and supernumerary period. 

Be responsible for ensuring and delivering a co-ordinated approach to the on boarding and induction of new starters. Supporting the workforce in clinical skill development and working towards clinical competencies. 

 Offer pastoral support, mentorship and preceptorship. Be responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating retention activities and the delivery of the preceptorship standards and evaluation. 

Act as an expert clinician role model and offer professional advice and clinical skills teaching for midwives in the clinical practice setting. 

Support the implementation of key projects in relation to the retention of staff and pastoral care for staff, or as identified by the Director of Midwifery and Heads of Midwifery in line with trust wide/national initiatives.
 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
 
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
 
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
 
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Teaching and assessing qualification.
  • Evidence of on-going professional development
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in Midwifery or evidence of working towards
  • Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
  • Formal Leadership training and/or qualification.
  • NIPE examiner.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant relevant clinical experience in midwifery across all settings. .
  • Experience in formally supporting students/leaners, newly qualified midwives, internationally educated midwives and/or new starters/ returners.
  • Experience in Audit I
  • Initiating and managing change
  • Experience in teaching the workforce in clinical skill development and working towards clinical competencies.
  • Experienced in offering pastoral support, preceptorship and mentorship.
  • Evidence of teaching and formally assessing staff and students.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in delivering mandatory training and/or skills and drills simulations.
  • Experience in Benchmarking.
  • Report writing

SKills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to prioritise and demonstrate time management and organisational skills
  • Demonstarte advanced clinical skills in midwifery and the ability to teach these to others in the clinical area- including all intrapartum/high risk areas
