Job overview

The Estates department at Furness General Hospital is a group of highly skilled electrical and mechanical engineers, creative building craftspersons, and dedicated support staff.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Building Chargehand to join us.
 
You should be experienced, time served, and suitably qualified in a building discipline, ideally on a commercial/industrial level.

Main duties of the job

To undertake the duties of your core trade and to assist the Estates Officer to lead and co-ordinate the day to day activities of the Building maintenance service, outside contractors, and suppliers so as to deliver a robust, technically strong, customer responsive service which complies with all relevant statutory directives.

Working as part of a team, and individually, you will be required to carry out general building finishes maintenance within acute and community NHS properties.

The successful candidate must be able to self-motivate, work relatively unsupervised, and be a good communicator on all levels. Flexible working will be required where you will assist other trades and undertake other tasks to maintain the building services.

Delegated responsibility for maintaining a departmental budget and ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations in respect of all staff, patients and visitors who may be affected by the department’s actions. Also to monitor and guide staff and external contractors in order to complete their tasks and objectives.

The candidate must show good leadership qualities, and be willing to train to gain a thorough knowledge of the Trust’s assets and services.

A healthcare, commercial, or industrial background would be advantageous but not essential - as specific training will be provided.

This post is based at Furness General Hospital in Barrow in Furness.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised craft apprenticeship and relevant certification.
  • Formal health and safety certification
  • Higher National Certificate/Diploma
Desirable criteria
  • Supervisory or management qualification
  • Leadership or training qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 5 years previous experience in maintaining building and/or engineering services.
  • Experience of information technology.
  • Previous experience of working in a supervisory/management capacity.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working within a healthcare setting
  • Asbestos awareness training and experience

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good communicator on all levels.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Multi-skilled.
  • The ability to analyse data, technical drawings and complex instructions.
  • To be able to think quickly and respond to difficult and contentious questions.
