Job overview
This is a 12 month fixed term post for an ENT Specialty Doctor.
The successful candidate will be part of the ENT team who provide a comprehensive out-patient, elective surgery and emergency service in this large busy District General Hospital.
The Department of ENT Surgery treats all aspects of patients within this specialty and this post is an integral part of this. The department provides 24 hour 3 tier emergency cover from the main hospital base of Royal Cornwall Hospital, with additional outpatient clinics at local community hospital sites.
There is a dedicated ENT outpatient department co-located with Audiology at Royal Cornwall Hospital. All emergency and elective surgery is performed at Royal Cornwall Hospital.
There is an adult ENT ward (shared with vascular surgery) and a dedicated ENT theatre with second stage facilities for same day discharge. Children’s surgery takes place in Tower theatres adjacent to the Paediatric ward base
Main duties of the job
- Have some responsibility for running the ward, carrying out ward rounds and supervising other Doctors (F2, CT trainees and ST GP trainees).
- Have some responsibility for Emergency Treatment Clinic care for acute referrals that is held on the ward.
- Have some responsibility for seeing outpatients in clinic under the supervision of senior medical staff.
- Have some responsibility for independent operating of general ENT surgical cases and assisting in more complex surgery.
- Participate in the on call at a middle grade (2nd tier) level.
- Have an opportunity for training in outpatients and operating theatres.
- Contribute to the teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.
- Have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
- Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
- Attend meetings as appropriate.
- Fulfil duties of weekly timetable.
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of ENT.
- To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the ENT Department.
- Teaching and training of junior staff, and opportunity to teach medical students within the Peninsular Medical School.
- To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

Person specification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience as a registrar (ST3-8) or Specialty Doctor/Staff Grade level within ENT.
- Capable of independently undertaking operating lists and outpatient clinic.
- Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior colleagues as appropriate.
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration.
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate qualification such as DOHNS, DLO, MRCS, MRCS(ENT), FRCS.
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
