Job overview

Consultant Anaesthetist - General Interest, with an interest in Pre-Operative Assessment and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing.

The general anaesthetic consultant and SAS body deliver elective and emergency anaesthesia and fulfil the following operational and governance and quality improvement roles:
Rota coordination, both on-call, sessional, and long day trauma and CEPOD rotas.
Colleagues represent RCHT Anaesthesia nationally in their roles as College examiners, British Society Echocardiography examiner, AAGBI council member, VASGBI Committee Council member, Faculty Pain Medicine Professional Standards Committee members and on the RCOA National CD Executive Committee.
RCHT is well represented in the Deanery with both College Tutors but also the Head of School, College CPD advisor and Pain Regional Advisor within the department

Main duties of the job

As a general rule, the post holder can expect the post to include:
-  Four to five elective anaesthetic lists per week.
- The department also utilises fixed flexi sessions and annualised flexi sessions to provide the post-holder and the department with flexibility and to maintain and increase exposure to previous or new competencies for the post-holder.
- A share of the emergency CEPOD and Trauma 12 hour lists, at a frequency of approximately one list every 4 weeks, with internal cover from an average pool of eight anaesthetists for that session.
-  A 1:30 on-call for anaesthesia, or as may be required to meet departmental needs. The postholder will not be rostered for elective work immediately following any on-call.
- 2.5 SPAs (in the first year)
-  1.25 PAs per list to include pre and post op care. All day lists count as 2.5 PA
- On call is remunerated as a result of bi-annual diary exercise, currently about 1PA.
-  Negotiable – 1.25 PAs: Participation in the Trauma Transfer Consultant on call rota for those who express an interest and have the required training. This PA allocation is annualised and whose rota is written flexibly well in advance based on individuals’ availability

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • GMC registration
  • GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) in Anaesthetics at time of interview.
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a broad range of problems in Anaesthesia.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Emergency CEPOD and Trauma experience
  • Experience in pre-assessment to Higher competency
  • Paediatric Anaesthesia in accordance with Royal College expectation of Adult General Anaesthetist with Certificate of Completion of Training
Desirable criteria
  • ETC
  • APLS
  • ICM / PHEM subspecialty qualifications
  • Advanced and/or blue-light driving
  • Management of Multi-Disciplinary Teams
