Main duties of the job

To support Cornwall and Isles of Scilly integrated care board (CIOSICB) in achieving high quality and cost-effective prescribing and medicines optimisation, through effective working between primary, secondary, intermediate and community care services.

Identification and implementation of cost-effective and evidence based prescribing initiatives. Working with practices and leading work in developing and implementing prescribing initiatives at practice and CIOSICB level.

To ensure prescribing by healthcare providers is in accordance with national standards, locally identified priorities and the clinical governance framework and is safe, of high quality, evidence based, rational, equitable and clinically and cost-effective.

To maximise the benefits and minimise the risks associated with medicines ensuring best care, outcomes and experience for patients; optimising their drug therapy according to clinical need.

We offer the flexibility to work from an office (Bodmin or Truro), and from home, depending on the requirements of the team. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The pharmaceutical advisor will work closely with members of the prescribing team to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities:

·         To support the senior integrated care area (ICA) clinical pharmacist to engage with GP practices to ensure delivery of financial cost savings and to support high quality prescribing.

·         Act as clinical lead for one or more agreed therapeutic areas, for example; diabetes, respiratory, antibiotics, respiratory and joint formulary.

·         To promote safe, evidence based, clinical and cost-effective prescribing within each practice. This will involve the utilisation and interpretation of ePACT2 database tags and other relevant information.

·         Support practices in changing their prescribing policies to be in line with national, CIOSICB prescribing and clinical governance priorities.

·         To support the senior clinical pharmacists in reporting GP practice performance for their therapeutic areas.

·         To hold meetings alongside the senior clinical pharmacists with the GPs to discuss prescribing in priority therapeutic areas.

·         To assist in any emergency planning and response measures as required by the CIOSICB.

·         Supporting the investigation of critical incidents involving medicines including dispensing errors in both pharmacies and GP practices.

·         Responsible for the investigation of concerns and complaints from patients regarding their medication.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Masters degree in pharmacy (or pre-2000 equivalent)

Professional registration

Essential criteria
  • Current member of the General Pharmaceutical Council

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in community pharmacy or other sectors
  • Demonstrable experience of an extended pharmaceutical role, for example in education or health promotion
  • Up to date knowledge of prescribing issues in primary and secondary care, and current health policies
  • Specific knowledge and experience dealing with care of the elderly

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
