Job overview

Do you want to be a part of an exciting development to improve the health of the population we serve?  We are looking for two dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant Vascular Surgeons to join Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s North Wales Vascular Network.

The tertiary unit for major arterial surgery is located at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire.  As an integral part of this development we have installed a state of the art Hybrid Theatre in addition to a new interventional radiology suite in Glan Clwyd hospital.  The Health Board has invested in a team of consultant surgeons, interventional radiologists, middle grade doctors, specialist nursing staff, and a dedicated vascular ward.

The North Wales Vascular Network provides services to a population of approximately 700,000 residents. Spoke services are provided at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

These posts are a combination of replacement and expansion, in part arising as a result of a move to increase provision of surgical services at our spoke sites, and to reduce on call frequency from 1:8 to 1:9

The successful candidates will form part of a rota consisting of 1 week in 9 as Vascular Consultant of the Week (VCOW) and 1 night in 9 on call overnight.
There is a dedicated vascular middle grade on call overnight.

Main duties of the job

All consultants will be job planned to provide regular service on the arterial hub site at Glan Clwyd and one spoke site, either Wrexham Maelor Hospital or Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.
This includes in person attendance at the main weekly MDT, currently on a Friday afternoon at Glan Clwyd every week, and 1 week in 9 covering Vascular Consultant of the Week (VCOW). In the event a successful candidate is offered sessions in IR procedures these will take place at Glan Clwyd Hospital.
The VCOW week is job planned on a prospective cover basis, i.e. consultants who wish to be absent from VCOW duties will be expected to swap this duty with colleagues. All other activities are job planned on a non-prospective cover basis.

In conjunction with our existing Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists and a hard-working, highly motivated team of medical and nursing staff, the successful appointee will provide a high quality, modern service in a rapidly developing unit.  The posts will be based at Glan Clwyd Hospital and will service our spoke sites at Wrexham Maelor Hospital or Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.

The successful candidates will be expected to reside within 30 minutes travel time of Glan Clwyd Hospital when on call, however on site overnight accommodation for on call purposes is available for those who choose to reside further away. This allows for the possibility of consultants living in any area of the Health Board or in areas of North West England within a reasonable commute.
