This is an exciting opportunity to join an experienced and motivated child and young people service team at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Department of Paediatrics at South Tees is a dynamic department working across two sites - Middlesbrough and Northallerton. This post is a locum post of Acute General Paediatrician with a specialist interest in Respiratory. All Consultants work cross site and a variety of opportunities are available for this.
Main duties of the job
We are a large secondary care centre in the Tees Valley area providing acute, community and specialist care as well as planned services for children in Middlesbrough, Redcar and Northallerton. We provide a broad range of specialist treatments including cardiology, diabetes, epilepsy, cystic fibrosis, asthma, paediatric endocrine, allergies, gastroenterology and the full range of community paediatric services. We have 6 commissioned level 2 HDU bed and we are part of the North East Paediatric Critical Care Network.
We have a large number of trainees in the department at all levels of training covering tier 1 and 2 rota including foundation doctors, general practice training, military GP trainee and specialist trainees rotating across the Northern Deanery. The department is actively involved in the delivery of the undergraduate education programme for medical students of Newcastle and Hull University.

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, MRCPCH (or equivalent) and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) for paediatrics at the time of interview.
The successful candidate will be appointed under the current terms and conditions of service for NHS Consultants. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a reduced/part time contract.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
South Tees hospital NHS trust provide secondary and tertiary level inpatient and outpatient paediatric respiratory services. There is a multidisciplinary team comprising respiratory nurses, doctors and respiratory physiotherapist looking after children young people with wide variety of respiratory conditions including chronic chest, PCD, bronchiectases and asthma. Team has excess to specialise investigations including spirometry, FeNO and chest CT and there is provision for administration of regular biologics e.g omalizumab to children young people with severe asthma.
Teesside cystic fibrosis centre is one of the 28 paediatric cystic fibrosis centre in the united Kingdom and provide multidisciplinary specialist care to the CYP with cystic fibrosis across Tees valley and North Yorkshire.
South Tees is also part of North East and North Cumbria long term ventilation network providing care to children and young people requiring long term home ventilation in the region. There are 2 dedicated beds in the PCCU for inpatient care including starting and establishing long term ventilation. Regular outpatient clinics are held at James Cook.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- MRCPCH or equivalent
- The applicant must produce evidence that he/she is either on the UK Specialist Register or within 6 months of specialist registration date, and is expected to achieve specialist registration
- APLS or EPLS provider
Desirable criteria
- A higher qualification
- Management course for clinicians
- Course on “on the job” training
- Relevant CCT or equivalent
Clinical experience and effectiveness
Essential criteria
- General paediatric experience in both secondary and tertiary care
- Knowledge of and training in Child Protection
- Knowledge of legislation relating to child health
- Evidence of clinical audit
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of research or innovative service developments
- Formulation of guidelines
- 6/12 Experience in PICU during training
