Job overview
This post provides an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to join the existing team of 10 ENT consultants whilst delivering a specialist interest in all aspects of otology. The candidate will have the opportunity to be part of the bi-monthly cochlear MDT, IAD MDT and fortnightly Skull Base MDT depending on specific interest. The successful candidate will link into a progressive and enthusiastic multi-professional team based at James Cook which provides comprehensive ENT services to the population of Teesside, South Durham and North Yorkshire. They will contribute to the department’s teaching and training activities.
The department hosts the North East Cochlear Implant Programme (NERCIP), and contributes to a subregional lateral skull base surgical service in conjunction with the on site neurosurgical team. This is supported by a comprehensive audiology team delivering tertiary audiology,neonatal screening and management of balance disorders.
The department also comprises a fully established complete supraregional subspecialised Otorhinolaryngology service . This includes Rhinology (with anterior skull base surgery), Head and Neck surgery, the sub-regional Head and Neck oncology centre and Paediatric ENT. Other specialist services in the department include adult voice, paediatric voice, airway and swallow, and a comprehensive head & neck dystonia service, offering botulinum toxin treatment.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will complement and develop existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge & expertise in ENT with a sub-specialist interest in Otology. The post holder is therefore required to have full registration with the General Medical Council and a valid licence to practice and be on the specialist register for ENT or be within 6 months of CCT or equivalent at the time of interview.

The Otology Team, enjoy a close and collaborative working relationship with the Neurosurgical, Maxillofacial, Plastic Surgery and Ophthalmology departments, all based at James Cook.

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, FRCS (or equivalent) and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within approximately 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
The successful candidate will be appointed under the current terms and conditions of service for NHS Consultants. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a reduced/part time contract.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of interview
- Evidence of completion of formal training programme in ENT
- Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons/or Equivalent
- Training and experience in Otologic surgery
- Training in cochlear implantation or skull base and IAD surgery
Desirable criteria
- Educational Supervisor Training
- Qualifications in other specialist skill
Clinical experience and effectiveness
Essential criteria
- Clinical experience equivalent to completion of a formal training program in specialist otology
- Experience of leading improvement programmes, implementing change and monitoring compliance
- Evidence of teaching/training junior medical staff and undergraduate students
- Broad experience in General ENT and ENT emergency care
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of research
- Evidence of innovative service developments
- Evidence of any additional training or fellowship in Otology
Personal Attributes
Essential criteria
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GP’s, nurses and other agencies
- Resident within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital

- Evidence of developing educational material or courses
