Job overview

To carry out the receipt and processing of samples from patients participating in clinical trials and perform basic clerical, data entry and technical duties under guidance, according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), within Pathology and Research & Development. This role may include working outside of core hours (8am – 8pm on weekdays) to support service requirements. The post holder is responsible for ensuring all specimens are accurately sorted, labelled and checked prior to entering patient demographic details onto the laboratory information system.  Samples will then be loaded onto analysers for local testing or stored and then dispatched to other laboratories when appropriate.  The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the organisation and upkeep of the department and deal with queries from a range of research and development staff as well as outside companies and sponsors.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform a range of cleaning and disinfection duties including benches, equipment and fridge areas on a regular basis.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required in a busy environment
  • To carry out procedures to package and document specimens which need to be sent to external organisations in line with current SOPs.
  • Ensure all procedures to maintain service provision, during routine or emergency technical or electrical failures/shutdowns, are in place and are reviewed regularly.
  • Responsible for ensuring completion of own daily workload to ensure effective and efficient running of the service on a daily basis.
  • Liaise with Laboratory staff regarding pre-analytical processing of samples and with staff from R&D departments regarding results and data
