The Pathology departments at North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) and South Tees Hospitals (STH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called the Tees Valley Pathology Services with services being delivered across all hospital sites.

Applications are invited for the Pathology Quality Audit Assistant role in the Tees Valley Pathology Service.

The post holder will support the Pathology Quality Manager to develop, implement and monitor an agreed programme of audit and quality improvement, including relevant action planning and supporting evidence to comply with the requirements of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), ISO standard 15189, Human Tissue Authority (HTA), Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA), UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Screening Quality Assurance Service (SQAS) and CQC.

Working with the Quality Audit Team Lead, the role will provide a comprehensive audit and clinical effectiveness support service to Clinicians, Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers within the Tees Valley Pathology Service.

The Pathology Audit Assistant will be based at the James Cook University Hospital and will work as part of the Pathology Quality Team. To meet the needs of the service, the post holder will be required to work in all sites that make up the Tees Valley Pathology Service as appropriate, as directed by the line manager.

The main duties of this role are to support Tees Valley Pathology Service staff in all aspects of quality audit and improvement activities and provide audit advice and training to staff at all levels.

The post holder will play an active role in the development, delivery, reporting and promotion of a robust and effective audit programme, to assist the Tees Valley Pathology Service in meeting its accreditation and regulatory requirements and will promote and encourage a culture that is committed to continuously improving and providing high quality patient services.

Leadership and Improvement Training

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers leadership and improvement training to all new staff to the Trust; this training programme has been designed to support our leaders in developing their understanding of leadership and management skills.  You will be expected to attend the New and Aspiring leaders programme, and the Foundation Quality Improvement Programme that the Trust delivers. After you complete this one and a half day of training you will be able to explore further leadership and improvement training opportunities, we offer further in-house courses and bitesize programmes and leadership apprenticeships at level 3,5 and 7.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of NHS diagnostic clinical laboratories accreditation standards and quality frameworks.
  • Understanding of clinical governance, clinical audit and achieving quality targets.
  • Physical skills including keyboard skills and use of laboratory equipment
  • Use of data analysis software, e.g., Microsoft Excel and a sound knowledge of Word and Powerpoint.
  • Practical experience of the audit process.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work effectively, individually or as part of team

  • Basic working knowledge of Pathology IT systems.
  • Basic working knowledge of QPulse or similar document management system.

  • Skilled in the effective communication of data using a variety of methods (verbally/writing/presentations) and assisting clinical staff with interpretation of data and audit results.
  • Experience of working with minimal supervision.
