LAS ST3 in Paediatrics

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST3-5)

Job overview

The department is a busy general paediatric department. Acutely ill patients are referred either directly by their General Practitioners or by the Accident and Emergency Department. Referrals mostly go the six bedded Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) on B10. If they need a longer admission then they are transferred to either B11 Bays which has two six-bedded areas and two cubicles, or B11 Cubicles which has ten cubicles, one of which is a designated High Dependency Area. Both areas take medical and surgical (including subspecialties) patients up to 18 years of age. There were five thousand medical admissions/PAU attendances per year. Also, on B10 is a six bedded bay and a cubicle which are used for day case surgery (ENT, General surgery, Dental, Ophthalmic).

Main duties of the job

This is a locum approved for service (LAS) post to fill in the gap created by speciality paediatrician moving to neonatal rota. It is based at Warrington Hospital. The post is at middle grade level and the duties will include seeing paediatric referrals from A&E and primary care, care of paediatric inpatients both on the Paediatric ward and the assessment unit, seeing newborn babies on the postnatal ward and attendance at high-risk deliveries and preterm deliveries. The postholder supports the 1in 7 middle grade rota including weekends and nights. There is opportunity to get outpatient experience for developing skills which also supports paediatricians who want to do membership exams and progress in career. The postholder gains additional safeguarding experience with seeing cases referred for child protection medicals, preparing medical reports and participating in multiagency monthly peer reviews.
