Advanced Dissector Biomedical Scientist

The friendly team at Warrington Cellular Pathology department are looking for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist, to join us as an Advanced Practitioner in Specimen Dissection.

The post holder must have relevant qualifications including the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) in Histological Dissection and have completed or be working towards the IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma (ASD). Candidates who have relevant dissection experience and are working towards completion of the ASD, will be considered, if successful they would commence as Band 7, until completion of this qualification where they would then move to the Advanced Practitioner role (Band 8a). The post holder will be expected to dissect the range of specimens we receive with Gastrointestinal and Breast making a large proportion of the workload.  

Consideration will also be given to Clinical Scientists who have completed the Specialist Scientific Training Programme in Tissue Dissection and who can demonstrate relevant experience.

Main duties will include day-to-day organisation and management of the specimen dissection section, ensuring a timely workflow and maintenance of high scientific and technical standards. The post holder will use specialist knowledge to teach, train and supervise Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff in appropriate dissection techniques. The post holder will use accuracy and attention to detail to macroscopically describe, dissect and block sample specimens that fall within the RCPath designation of category A, B, C, D & E. The post holder will liaise closely with the Histopathology Laboratory Manager and Clinical Consultant team demonstrating good leadership and management skills, continuously striving for improved performance within the service. The post holder may deputise for the operational manager where necessary.

The post holder will be required to conform to agreed standard operational procedures, Health & Safety procedures, departmental and organisational policies and good laboratory practice. Within their work duties the post holder will be expected to comply with the standards as required of UKAS and other relevant professional and regulatory bodies e.g. H.T.A.

Qualifications

  • Relevant MSc or equivalent qualification
  • IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection or equivalent qualification and experience
  • Hold or working towards the IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in dissection
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
