Job overview

Applicants are invited to the post of Nurse Endoscopist working across both Warrington and Halton hospital sites in our JAG accredited endoscopy units.

The successful applicant will join a large, dynamic and flexible endoscopist team which includes Consultants in Gastroenterology, Consultants in General and Upper GI surgery, Nurse Endoscopists and Clinical Endoscopists who all scope as part of their job plans.

A comprehensive and expanding Gastroenterology service is provided including:

*All diagnostic and therapeutic modalities including capsule endoscopy, trans-nasal endoscopy,  EUS, ERCP and bowel cancer screening

* Comprehensive IBD, Nutrition, Hepatology and HPB services with specialist nurse support.

Main duties of the job

To perform upper and lower GI endoscopic examinations autonomously. To provide research based expert and holistic care and advice to patients with Colorectal and upper GI problems, to include their families/carers. To work in close liaison with the Endoscopy Clinical lead, Medical Staff and all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the giving of safe effective and high quality patient care. To be a resource of knowledge to other health care professionals through education and clinical practice.

 

The post holder will participate in the delivery of an endoscopic service by carrying out OGD’s, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. The post holder must demonstrate specific skills in disorders of the GI tract, including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic techniques and subsequent management.

 

To assist the and Clinical lead to coordinate aspects of audit in relation to both local and national criteria set for the development of Endoscopy Units including JAG and GRS requirements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

·                To carry out six clinical sessions, two admin sessions: to include protocol development, one cross cover session (as required) and one audit session.

·                To assess patient suitability for sedation using the agreed protocol.

·                To cannulate and administer IV sedation to the relevant client group under a Patient Group Directive.

·                To autonomously perform endoscopy including gaining full informed consent from the patient; performing polypectomy and biopsy of abnormal mucosa.

·                To make initial diagnosis and arrange patient follow up accordingly.

·                To document findings in endoscopy reporting system.

·                Participate as an active member of the nursing team, accountable for your practice and role modelling the highest standards of care to all members of the ward team.

 

·                Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of infection control policies, local strategy with practical experience and principles in relation to the clinical environment, patient care, the prevention of cross infection, outbreak management, good hand hygiene and environmental cleaning.

 

·                Leads in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of specialist care of patients admitted to the Endoscopy department in accordance with Trust and departmental protocols.

 

·                Actively involves others in communications between patients, their relatives and the multi-disciplinary team both within organisation and with external stakeholders to ensure excellent communication.

 

·                Work within national requirements for Nurse Endoscopy as set out by JAG and the BSG, ensuring minimal procedure numbers are performed and that JAG/GRS key performance indicators are in line with recommended minimum standards. This is to include maintaining JETS reports online.
