Job overview
We are looking for an experienced Consultant General Paediatrician to join the team on a fixed-term basis, with a unique portfolio of 4.2 PAs. The post-holder will represent the Trust as Neonatal Lead and must also have strong community paediatrics experience to support our Pre-School Clinics.
The successful applicant will join a team of 8 enthusiastic and dedicated paediatricians who deliver a range of children’s services.
Hours per week: 4.2 PA's
Main duties of the job
- Participate on adjusted on call rota on weekdays and weekends.
- Run Pre-school clinics
- Represent Trust as Neonatal Lead.
Within this, the successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly to deliver high quality care with particular emphasis on:
- Optimising use of all resources allocated to the post to develop appropriate services and techniques required to meet clinical needs.
- Adapt, assimilate, and integrate best practice from elsewhere to continuously improve care.
- Develop and maintain robust systems to ensure effective clinical audit in Neonates
- Further develop services as indicated by department needs and work with colleagues to identify additional resources needed to develop the service.
- Clinical assessment, resuscitation and timely onward referral, admission or discharge of all types of patients attending the department. It is expected that Consultants will lead the department during rostered sessions, maintaining situational awareness and redeploying staff to address resource-demand mismatches.
The detailed job plan will be agreed for the individual integrating with existing capacity, acknowledging the need to focus on core service delivery requirements. Other aspects of the programmed activities/supporting activities will be negotiated.

NHS Medical and Dental salaries are set at a national level. For new starters not already working to UK Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service will be appointed to the minimum paypoint. The starting salary paypoint can only be increased when there is evidence of relevant, completed years’ experience in terms of nature, type and level of role. The evidence required to increase a starting salary would be Payslips and details noted in the application form i.e. complete employment history

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC)
Eligibility
Essential criteria
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC and holding a licence to practice at time of appointment
- Evidence of achievement of Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) progress curriculum competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
- A minimum of 36 months postgraduate training in paediatrics including 6 months in a Level 3 Neonates Unit or equivalent
- Eligibility to work in the UK

- Applicant’s knowledge is up to date and fit to practice safely
Language Skills
Essential criteria
- All applicants to have demonstratable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following - Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English - Applicants have scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent equal to those required for recruitment to MMC specialty training programmes
Clinical Skills & Specialty Specific Skills
Essential criteria
- Experience in working independently during ‘out of normal working hours’ relevant to job
- Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job
- Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
- Shows aptitude for practical skills required in the job
- Advanced Paediatric Life Support or European Paediatric Life Support and Newborn Life Support (or equivalents) valid at interview date and at time of appointment
- Level 3 Safeguarding Children valid at interview date and experience of managing safeguarding cases
Desirable criteria
- Expertise in cardiology, able to run independent cardiology clinics, perform echocardiography and interpret 12 lead and 24 hour ECG sand memo recordings
