Job overview

We currently have a vacancy for a Band 4 Nursing Associate/Assistant Practitioner to work on our surgical unit consisting of Ward 5, Surgical Day Case Unit and Surgical Treatment Unit. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and dynamic and possess excellent communication skills to work with our team 

Duties will include assisting with the care of our patients from admission through to discharge including pre and post-operative care . Our patients include those undergoing elective and non-elective procedures under the following specialities :

General Surgery
Gynaecology
Breast
Urology
ENT
Opthalmology
Orthopaedics

The Nursing Associate will provide holistic and person-centred care and support for people across the sphere of nursing and always communicating effectively within the team, with other health care professionals and with the patient family, carers/ visitors.

The Nursing Associate will work independently but with the support and leadership of registered nurses, working within aspects of the nursing process to ensure high standards and a safe environment are maintained.

Hours per week: 37.5

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake clinical tasks agreed within competence to the specific clinical area
  • Support individuals with all aspects of care including daily living, providing person-centered care and promoting health and independence
  • To implement a plan of care which is in accordance with the patient’s individual care needs and the predicted date of patient discharge
  • To support and maintain patient safety by undertaking clinical risk assessments and utilising the clinical incident reporting system.
  • Ensure the privacy, dignity and safety of individuals is always maintained.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognise changing priorities seeking advice and guidance from the Registered Nurse or other registered health professionals as appropriate.
  • Work within the principles of informed consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking nursing and care procedures
  • Improve the quality of care by contributing to the continuous monitoring of people’s experience of care.
  • To recognise situations, behaviours or errors that could result in poor care/ outcomes and report to manager/trained nurse any untoward incidences (e.g., complaints, accidents, defective equipment) and take appropriate action to ensure safety of patients, staff and relatives
  • To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff, within own management responsibility.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register
  • Nursing Associate foundation degree qualification
  • Evidence of recent professional development in an up-to-date portfolio

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the scope of the role of the Nursing Associate in context of the nursing and interdisciplinary team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development
  • Understands and acts in line with NMC professional standards for practice contained within The Code
  • Knowledge of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice
  • Understand requirements for NMC professional Revalidation
  • Ability to assess clinical situations and act appropriately
  • Able to assess, plan and evaluate patient care, taking into account the needs and desires of the patients
  • Awareness of effects of ill health and the ageing process

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent previous experience within a comparable role/transferable skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own delated workload
  • Ability to deal with non-routine and unpredictable nature of workload and individual patient contact
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal and non-verbal communication) with patients/relatives and carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to develop effective and appropriate relationships with people, their families, carers and colleagues
  • Demonstratable knowledge of assessment and therapeutic interventions in area of practice
  • Experience of developing programmes of patients/clients and of providing advice
  • Ability to communicate in a professional way with people at all levels of understanding either face to face, on the telephone, email or written communication
  • Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate
