Job overview

As a visionary and strategic leader with extensive, proven expertise in clinical research and development, you will be instrumental in driving the Trust’s clinical research and innovation goals, fostering a culture that champions continuous improvement and breakthrough advancements.

This is a pivotal post within the organisation at an important and exciting time for MCHFT on its journey to delivering outstanding, truly patient centred healthcare services. A strong focus on access to clinical research opportunities for all sits amongst our ambitions, and this new post will lead on the growth and development of our existing clinical research function.

 

The postholder will lead on the strategic planning and operational delivery of all research and development activity at the Trust, developing a strong academic and research function and supporting the delivery of the Trust’s vision, aims and objectives.  As a subject matter expert in clinical research, you will be responsible for setting standards of best practice in research within the organisation, providing clarity in governance arrangements, timelines, resource requirements, risks, benefits, and outcomes related to research and clinical academic activity.

 

The post holder will be responsible for defining and articulating a forward-looking research and innovation strategy that aligns with the NHS’s long-term goals for improved patient care, cost efficiency, and workforce development

Main duties of the job

 

·         Responsible for the development, governance and management of all  research and development functions across the Trust.

·         Responsible for ensuring all clinical trials and studies comply with the regulatory and legal framework and are reported through the relevant agencies, sponsor, and host organisations within required timelines.

·         Responsible for developing and promoting the Trust’s Research and Innovation interests through local and national research networks as required.

  • Drive the adoption of new technologies, processes, and methodologies that improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.
  • Evaluate innovative solutions and pilot programs to assess their potential impact on the NHS.

·         Working with the Chief Medical Officer and Clinical Lead for Research, develop and deliver a new Research and Development Strategy maximising the potential of the Trust and its partners, and ensuring that research activity is aligned to the broader strategic aims of the Trust.

·         Lead on the development of new research partnerships with academic institutions,  commercial partners, and wider system health and social care partners.

·         Maximise research income from external peer reviewed funding sources.

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of local hospital and community services for people across East Cheshire (population 399K) and West Cheshire and Chester boroughs (population 357K).

The Trust provides high quality planned and unplanned/emergency care, cardiac and critical care as well as child health, maternity services, and intermediate care across our sites at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         Provide senior visible leadership in the clinical research space across the Trust.

·         Lead and manage the clinical research team within the Trust, creating an environment where all staff feel valued and are supported to develop to their full potential through individual performance review and the establishment of personal development plans.

·         Ensure appropriate opportunities for research training across the trust, development activity across the department, leading on team growth, sign posting to external training where relevant.

·         Ensure appropriate and effective systems are in place to manage aspects of the service including staff, environment, financial budgetary management, service delivery.

·         Develop and maintain systems and processes to ensure that activities are appropriately prioritised and allocated, and that effective supervision is in place to support work delegated to specific teams as part of the work.

·         Ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams both as a manager and credible member of the multi-disciplinary project team understanding and acknowledging the role and function of other members of the team.

·         The postholder will demonstrate the ability to function confidently and competently and demonstrate the need for minimum direct supervision, leading strategically and operationally with credibility and confidence.  

·         Responsibility for financial resources:

Ø Lead on developing new strategies for income generation within Research and Development in line with clinical academic and clinical research aims of the Trust.

Ø Manage and oversee all research budgets and appropriate devolution of income within the Trust.

·         Responsibility for Information resources:

Ø Collates information from a wide range of sources to provide assurance of the performance of activities related to research.

Ø Utilises information to create reports to the executive team, board and other stakeholders as required
