Working Full time: 37.5 hours per week - Fixed Term 12 Months

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a  Treating Tobacco Dependency Service CNS in secondary care and help to provide on-going support for people to quit, both in the hospital as an inpatient and following discharge.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, passionate, organised and proactive individual with experience in smoking cessation and working within a secondary care environment.

Main duties of the job

The Government 10 - year forward plan has highlighted NICE PH48 as the way forward to have the biggest impact on the reduction of smoking prevalence in England, ultimately the intervention which will have the biggest drive-in reducing health inequalities nationally.

As a TTDS Nurse Specialist for Secondary Care, you will be an integral part of Smoking Cessation in the hospital, under the supervision of the Respiratory Specialist Nurse you will support with ensuring a medical model of care for smoking cessation is an integrated part of routine client care by all health professionals. Ultimately this programme will lead to the most significant referral route for the overall smoking cessation service within the county.

Working for our organisation

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.                                                                 

 The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £23 (standard) or £43 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first three months of employment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN /RSCN Diploma or equivalent
  • Degree or working towards
  • Post-registration qualification or evidence of further study.
  • Smoking Cessation Training – Level 2 delivered by an NHS Stop Smoking Service or the National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training or willingness to undertake on commencement of post
  • Willing to undertake Level 3 training
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (CPD)
Desirable criteria
  • Smoking Cessation Training – Level 3
  • Teaching/training qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Speciality knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues and an understanding of corporate objectives.
  • Relevant Post Registration clinical experience
  • Initiation and implementation of change
  • Experience of delivering healthcare, or health advice to patients and the public
  • Experience communicating sensitive and complex information, requiring persuasive skills, empathy and reassurance.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction interventions
  • Monitoring, evaluation and audit, including report writing
  • Experience of working in NHS secondary care
